🔵 The Arctic is no longer a distant frontier – it is becoming central to Europe's security. As the EU prepares a new Arctic Strategy later this year, the region is emerging as a critical arena where security, defence, infrastructure, climate change and great power competition increasingly intersect. In a new European Policy Centre Policy Brief, Maria Martisiute (EPC), Linda Solstrand Dahlberg (UiT- The Arctic University of Norway) and Tobias Etzold (EPC) argue that the EU's current Arctic policy no longer reflects today's strategic realities. They call for a more integrated approach that treats the Atlantic, Arctic and Baltic as a single security space and strengthens Europe's resilience across land, sea and space. The authors outline key priorities for the EU's forthcoming Arctic Strategy: 🔴 Integrate the Atlantic, Arctic and Baltic into one strategic security framework. 🔴 Strengthen Europe's response to hybrid threats, including attacks on critical infrastructure. 🔴 Embed the Arctic into Europe's defence industrial and technological base. 🔴 Invest in dual-use infrastructure, from undersea cables to satellites. 🔴 Build a comprehensive civil-military approach to preparedness and resilience.
