About

ALMARFELD is an independent software project creating free, open-source Windows utilities and practical guides for local file workflows.

Practical Windows tools

ALMARFELD is an independent software project publishing Windows utilities for practical file, text, PDF, configuration and certificate tasks. The current applications are free and open source, with an emphasis on local processing, clear limitations and workflows that leave the original file under the user's control.

Browse the Software catalog for current downloads, Windows requirements, release notes, SHA-256 information and the documented scope of each application.

Why the tools are local-first

Many ALMARFELD utilities work with files that can contain private or sensitive information: signed documents, certificate material, configuration values, PDFs, photos and application data. The applications are therefore designed around local processing rather than requiring an account or uploading a user's files to an ALMARFELD service.

The product pages state important exceptions and requirements explicitly. For example, some Wails applications need Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime, while PDF preview in P7S Universal Viewer can depend on WebView2. The Windows binaries are not Authenticode signed, so the official download pages also publish SHA-256 values and explain what a matching hash does and does not prove.

Open source and verifiable releases

Source code, release notes and issue trackers are available on GitHub. Product pages link to the matching repository and release instead of hiding the origin of a download behind an unrelated installer service.

Release documentation distinguishes tested behavior from assumptions. A tool is not described as performing checks it does not perform. For example, certificate-chain inspection is not presented as Windows trust-store evaluation, P7S integrity is not presented as legal validation, and metadata removal is not presented as guaranteed anonymity or secure PDF redaction.

How to use the documentation

The Guides section explains common Windows workflows around the same problems the software is built to handle: checking downloads, understanding P7S signatures, diagnosing CSV files, preserving identifiers, reviewing EXIF metadata, working with certificate formats, organizing PDFs and comparing configuration safely.

Guides are written to answer a concrete task, explain failure cases and state the limits of the method. Where an ALMARFELD application is relevant, the guide links to it; where the application cannot answer a question, the guide says so. The goal is to help a reader understand the workflow even if they decide to use a different tool.

Worked examples use synthetic data, not customer files. References to versioned source code explain application-specific behavior; links to standards and vendor documentation provide the wider context. Expected results are tied to the example and version shown, rather than a claim that every file or Windows environment has been tested. You can reproduce the examples and report a discrepancy through Support.

Corrections and support

Software changes over time, and technical documentation can need corrections. If a guide is unclear, a download behaves differently from its documentation, or a limitation is missing, please report it through the Support page or the relevant GitHub repository. Security-sensitive reports should follow the Security page.

General questions can be sent through the Contact page. ALMARFELD does not require a user account to read the guides or download the public software.
