On a budget and here for a short time? Or just looking for a place to crash before you can rent your house for the season?

Five hostels/lodges provide budget Whistler accommodation.

Whistler accommodation - Hostelling International

Situated on Alta Lake, this hostel provides magnificent views with pool tables and 32 clean rooms. If booking online, you must do this 2 days in advance.

You are also restricted and can only stay a maximum of 6 nights lodging in a row. This is due to their loyalty program where you are rewarded with one free night if you stay 7 nights or more. So ensure you pre-book another hostel or lodging if planning to stay longer than 6 nights.

Expect to pay between CAN$19-28/night. Depending on whether you are a member and what time of year.

The only downfall with this hostel is that you must catch a bus to get to and from the village and there are only 4 buses a day.

If you're looking to call and reserve a bed, their business hours are 7-11am and 4-10pm.

Whistler accommodation - Southside Lodge

Nicely situated in Creekside. This is about a 10 minute bus ride from the village. The buses run every 15 minutes. However, Creekside is a small village in itself with grocery and liquor stores, laundry, video shops, gas stations, bars and restaurants.

The great thing about Creekside is that it also has a Gondola going up Whistler Mountain, so you have direct access to the mountain. There is actually no need to go into the village. Creekside has everything you need!

The rates range between CAN$25-40/night. They also offer condo's and suites for people planning to stay long term.

Their check in time is after 4pm, so their will be no one there before then. Make sure you organise yourself.

Whistler accommodation - Fireside Lodge

Located between Whistler and Creekside. This hostel is situated on Nordic Drive. Bus access is only a 5 minute walk from the lodge, with buses running every 15 minutes.

With 58 beds available, the going rate is CAN$30/night during the winter.

A small fee (check how much) is charged for bedding. Alternatively, bring your own and save yourself the fee. Internet, laundry, sauna, communal kitchen, and pool table are all onsite. But there is no TV here.

This is a family oriented lodge with a variety of rooms. You have the choice of dormitory to family rooms.

Whistler accommodation - BCIT/Arts Lodge

This hostel is also on Nordic Drive and holds a small amount of people.

There is technically no heating in the rooms, however they do light up a stone fireplace which heats up the hostel.

A small hostel, so no website.

This is owned and run by the Student Society of UBC. Mainly a hostel for the university students, but they do accept other visitors. Check out their website for more information on how to reserve a bed.

Long Term Whistler Accommodation

Thousands people from around the world flock to Whistler to experience the winter season here - just one problem, where do you find long term Whistler accommodation?

How it works

The fight is fierce for renting a house or even finding a room to stay for the season. You ring up advertised rooms and houses only to be greeted by an answering machine to leave your name and number and "they will get back to you". They don't get back to you!

This is the problem...

House owners have hundreds of people call them each day replying to their ad.

The demand is high, but the supply for Whistler accommodation is low.

Guess who has the upper hand? That's right....the owners.

So...

They basically pick and choose who they want. This is done by either deciphering how your voice sounds on the answering machine, your situation (how many people will be renting the house), some even try and bribe you and see how much extra you are willing to pay for renting the room or house!

How much should you budget?

Whistler accommodation is expensive. Full stop. The going rate for a bed is between CAN$500-800. All depending on if utilities are included or not.

For renting a house, you can expect to pay between CAN$1500 - $6000. Mind you, if you pay $6000 you would be able to fit 10 people in it, which equates to $600 each. So it's all relative.

Where can you find accommodation?

When looking for long term Whistler accommodation there are 2 main sources;

The Pique and The Question.

These are both local newspapers and both have an online version available.

Both newspapers comes out every Thursday and the online version is available on Thursday. (The Pique available at 3pm and The Question about noon).

If you are already here, then you have other means of finding Whistler accommodation, like notices in hostels, The Whistler Employment Centre, Nesters Laundromat, Alpine Meadows Market and Petro Canada or Husky gas stations in Creekside.

If you're not in Whistler, the Pique and Question are really your only 2 methods.

If you are thinking about living in Pemberton you will need a car. Although it is significantly cheaper, it is a 20 minute drive away.

What to do once you have a place

Be prepared to provide references to landlords and sometimes, proof of employment. Remember, they are giving their house to a stranger and want to know their belongings are in good hands.

Most landlords will also want a security bond (which is about half of one months rent) and the first months rent paid upfront.

You should also sign a contract stating the conditions of the house and its belongings. State everything that is spoken about and agreed upon. Demand receipts of payment. Don't rely on a verbal agreement.

Ask who is responsible for general maintenance, plumbing, snow clearing, electrical problems, etc. Also double check if utilities are included and if so, which ones.

Don't be afraid or shy to ask these things. This is why people get into problems and arguments because it was all based on assumption, rather than sorting it out at the start and everyone knowing who is responsible for what.

The Residential Tenancy Office gives free advice on www.pssg.gov.bc.ca/rto or call 1800 661 4886 or 1800 665 8779. You should download a copy of an Inspection Report from www.tenants.bc.ca and have a signed copy attached to your tenancy agreement. You may also call 1800 665 1185.

If you're looking for my recommendation from personal experience...

Attempt to secure your Whistler accommodation in September/October. Beat the mad rush.

If you happen to arrive with no accommodation, which the majority of people do. Keep in mind that you may not find accommodation in 1 week. Just stick with it and through word of mouth, etc you will be in a place in no time.

Hostels are a great way to meet people and find a house with or just to get information.

Staff Housing

If you secure a job with Whistler Blackcomb, you have the opportunity to live in staff housing and secure your Whistler accommodation at a discounted rate (around $250-330/month, including utilities).

There are many different types of staff housing available. Some resemble a hostel type environment, with communal utilities and the possibility of people coming and going (due to change of jobs, or finally found a house). Although some are a shared apartment with private facilities. Click here to read more about it.

Staff housing does have a waitlist, so you would want to get in as soon as possible. This usually starts when the Whistler/Blackcomb job fair begins in late October, early November.

The way it works is.....

If you secure staff housing during the job fair and don't get a job with the mountain, you must vacate your room immediately and continue looking for a job and place to stay.

This allows the person who did secure a job with the mountain to move into staff housing.

Some other employers offer staff housing; Fairmont Chateau, The Grocery Store, Westin Resort & Spa, McDonalds, The Shoestring Lodge and Whistler Village Resort.

You will need to catch a bus up to Staff Housing, costing 50c each time. Alternatively...walk. There are some Staff housing near the Village Gondola's, but not too many rooms are there.
