    Writing sample (2012):

"Language lives. It is an inextricable component of any individual or collective cultural identity. It is the communication of signifiers, images and experiences that constitute one’s reality and thus part of one’s identity. It is the fortifying bond of those sharing a reality, and elevates the oppressed to organic sentiments of self-determination. A shared reality of oppression can thus give rise to identification through language. Specifically in the English-speaking Caribbean context, its history of colonialism and its rich linguistic, cultural and political heritage provides an excellent framework through which to study the relationship between language, identity, and politics. Caribbean history is a history of oppression. Caribbean cultural identity, food, literature, folklore, and language, among others, are thus all products of a peoples' resilient stand against cultural oppression, and the success of national liberation movements throughout the region. These movements needed unity, they needed a bond; they needed language. Transformative nationalist leaders, such as Bahamian Sir Lynden Pindling and Trinidadian Dr. Eric Williams understood and capitalized on the potential of language to as a crucial factor for unity. Non-coincidentally, so did many other Caribbean, African, and Latin American leaders. They used language, along with their exceptional leadership skills, to engage supporters with fiery rhetoric to criticize the colonial institution, while cleverly using native dialect to establish a cultural connection with their followers. They used Caribbean creole, a language forged in a history of rebellion and imbued with remnants of African and Native American ancestry, to motivate Caribbean peoples' desire for independence."
