Municipalities in South Africa play a pivotal role in fostering growth and prosperity. To achieve this, there is a need for a well-run local government sector, because of its critical role in ensuring service delivery, accelerating decentralised growth, facilitating inclusive growth, and attracting job-creating investment. "In this episode of the #NedbankCommercialBanking Think Series, I expand on how targeted investments in infrastructure (primarily roads, sanitation, water and energy) can have a strong multiplier effect on creating new jobs and supporting livelihoods. Beyond Agoa: Strengthening South Africa’s Trade Resilience With uncertainty around South Africa’s preferential trade terms under the African Growth & Opportunity Act (Agoa), it is clear that businesses must rethink their trade, supply chain, and financial strategies to remain competitive. Relying too heavily on a single market is no longer viable, diversifying export destinations and strengthening financial partnerships will be key to building long-term resilience. So, what is the way forward? Expanding trade partnerships by leveraging agreements such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), EU trade arrangements, and BRICS collaborations to unlock new markets. Strengthening supply chains through investment in infrastructure and alternative trade routes, such as those via Mozambique and Saldanha Bay, to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Forming financial alliances beyond traditional banking by working with trusted financial institutions to develop bespoke trade and supply chain finance and liquidity solutions, supporting businesses as global trade dynamics shift. Encouraging policy flexibility and innovation by reviewing customs duties, rules of origin, and trade incentives to help South African businesses stay competitive and attract investment. South Africa is at a critical moment in its trade journey. By building strong alliances, improving trade infrastructure, and embracing financial partnerships, we can create a resilient and adaptable trade environment, one that supports sustainable growth, investment, and job creation. Now is the time to rethink, reposition, and secure the future of our country’s trade.
