Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Knowledge-Building Workshop A pivotal Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Knowledge-Building Workshop was recently held at the Mtunzini Country Club, focusing on integrating Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) and Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) into the management plan for the uThukela Marine Protected Area (MPA). The workshop brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), local fishermen, local municipalities, and the University of Zululand. The event featured in-depth discussions on a wide range of topics, such as trends in ecosystem changes across KwaZulu-Natal, the role of estuaries in climate change mitigation and adaptation, the integration of indigenous knowledge in conservation, and observed changes within the uThukela MPA estuaries. These conversations provided valuable insights into effective climate adaptation strategies, ecosystem management, and the urgent need to protect vulnerable coastal regions. Yolokazi Galada from DFFE noted the gaps between legislation and conservation science, stressing the need to address them. She also highlighted conflicts among stakeholders with different land-use goals, which threaten the prioritization of ecosystems in conservation efforts. Sharon Louw from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, emphasized the crucial role of natural resources for local communities' livelihoods. "We should not underestimate the importance of natural resources to our communities since it’s their way of making a living. There is a need to implement sustainable harvesting.”

Welcome to the Hluhluwe research camp, affectionately known as ‘Dung Beetle’, which is situated on top of a hill in a coastal scarp forest. This camp, located on the iconic Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, is home to our Hluhluwe volunteer project and our Conservation Training Course. Volunteers at this project can expect to enjoy a landscape unlike any other, exquisite birdlife, and of course exciting days spent conserving priority species. Stay tuned for more information on the Hluhluwe project to come in the next few days. Have you visited this project before? We'd love to hear some of your memories in the comments! Such wonderful news. Great work by all involved with vultures under such threat throughout the country.
Positive news for vulture conservation as four rehabilitated Cape Vultures are released into the wild. Last month, Wildlife ACT together with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and FreeMe Wildlife, facilitated the release of four rehabilitated Cape Vultures into the Southern Drakensberg region. Each of the four individuals had been found grounded and in poor condition, subsequently being admitted to FreeMe Wildlife for rehabilitation. Prior to being transported to the release site, the vultures were fitted with tracking units and identification tags and rings by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s Bird and Mammals Scientist, Brent Coverdale. The Wildlife ACT team is responsible for responding to wildlife emergencies in the Southern Drakensberg region, making this hands-on experience with our partners invaluable. Following processing, the four Vultures were then safely transported to the release site near the Mzimkulu Vulture Hide, Southern Drakensberg. This location was chosen for the vulture safe feeding site managed by Wildlife ACT, as well as the proximity to our team for post-release monitoring. We are pleased to share that several of the released individuals have been sighted at the vulture safe feeding sight at the Mzimkulu Vulture Hide. They have been identified by their wing tags or leg rings, thanks to both guest photographs and camera trap images. Wildlife ACT would like to extend our thanks to our partners at Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and FreeMe Wildlife for a successful collaborative operation and for the learning opportunities provided to our team. With many thanks to CHEP for supporting our work with these iconic birds. Photos: Megan Whittington / Wildlife ACT
