On Friday Radio Helsinki announced that Livelaboratorio (roughly translated to Live Laboratory) an organisation owned by the Finnish Musicians Union, has signed a letter of intent to buy the financially-beleaguered FM station.
According to Livelaboratorio's board chair Ahti Vänttinen Radio Helsinki is an important resource for musicians.
"Radio Helsinki plays a vital role as the standard bearer for diversity in music and urban culture and we want to strengthen this role," Vänttinen said in the Radio Helsinki release. "It is very striking that it is musicians who are helping to save the station."
The Communications Regulatory Authority has already approved the letter of intent. Under the agreement Livelaboratorio will gain full rights to the station's operations, technical equipment and the name Radio Helsinki.
The current owners of the station, Kaupunkitarinat's board chair Tomi Ruotimo said that the sale of the station to musicians was natural.
"It's a very natural solution," Ruotimo said. "Radio Helsinki's new home fits well with the station's ideology."
Livelaboratorio also owns and operates the Helsinki music club G Livelab which opened its doors in August. Radio Helsinki first went on the air in the year 2000.
