In Helsinki a relatively large group of people turned up to vote before noon, said Veera Reuna of the city’s central election committee.

"It’s such great weather that people are heading outdoors and voting at the same time," she added.

According to Reuna, voting usually occurs in cycles: in the morning, afternoon and evening.

"The sun is shining in most of the country," said meteorologist Jari Tuovinen from the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Daytime temperatures are slightly above freezing in the south and below zero in central areas. In the north the mercury is down to -10 degrees Celsius.

"If you’re still using summer tyres, it may be a good idea to head to the polling station by foot," he said.

An area of rain is expected to move in from Sweden on Monday, bringing showers, sleet and snow to Finland as well as slightly milder weather.
