Although family problems normally come to a head at Christmas time, this does not necessarily result in an increase in persons seeking shelter. Christmas is one of the most important family holidays, so that victims of domestic abuse often choose to remain at home, in spite of the threat of violence.
Every year more than 1,000 women, 1,300 children and 60 men seek help at safe houses. Most women are between the ages of 20 and 40 years, and have young children. They are most often seeking protection from abusive partners.
Internet and Telephone Hotlines for Young Adults and Children
The Mannerheim League for Child Welfare provides a hotline for young adults and children, while the Save the Children Finland offers support and intervention via its online chat service, known as Manteli ("almond").
Trained volunteers are manning the hotlines to provide support for young adults and children round the clock. Manteli provides a real-time online chat service to those in need during the holiday season. The Child Welfare League’s Parents’ Hotline will take a holiday break until next January.
