The Sasser internet worm virus has infected thousands of computers in Finland. It also forced the Sampo bank and insurance concern to close its branches for a time on Monday while data security systems were updated.
Computer security expert Mikko Hypponen from F-Secure does not, however, anticipate an actual epidemic resulting from the virus. A view echoed by Finland's Communications Regulatory Authority.
The Sasser worm takes advantage of a security weakness within the Windows operating system. It spreads randomly to computers connected to the internet.
Computer Problems Close Bank Offices
The worm also caused banking and insurance company Sampo to close its doors on Monday morning. The company's 130 branches reopened for business later in the day. Sampo said its offices were closed as a precautionary measure while data security systems were updated.
A Sampo official said the virus had not damaged the company's ADP systems. Neither were internet banking services or cash dispenser facilities affected.
