Here are a few celebrations in the area to celebrate Earth Day, an annual global event held on April 22 and National Arbor Day, celebrated on the last Friday of April.

• 25th Annual City of South Lyon Arbor Day Ceremony is 4:30 p.m. April 25 at the South Lyon Area Historical Village “Chapel” in McHattie Park at 300 Dorothy St., South Lyon, southlyonmi.org, 248) 437-1735.

• In observance of Arbor Day, the city of Southfield will sponsor a tree planting ceremony at 11 a.m. April 25, at the Municipal Campus, 26000 Evergreen Road. Southfield Mayor Ken Siver and other elected officials will join city staff and residents in planting a tree in front of the Parks & Recreation Building, rain or shine, following a brief ceremony. • In honor of Arbor Day, the City of Oak Park will host Key Elementary students for a tree-planting ceremony near their school – at Key Park, (enter from Scotia, North of 9 Mile Road), at 10 a.m. April 25, www.oakparkmi.gov.

• In celebration of Earth Day, Bloomfield Township is hosting Operation Clean Sweep, April 26-27, register by April 21. Residents will be able to pick up supplies, including yard waste bags, trash bags, and gloves, at the Public Works building at 4200 Telegraph Road (just West of Township Hall), Monday-Thursday from 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m., 248-594-2800, https://bloomfieldtwp.org.

• RRRASOC member communities are welcome to take household hazardous waste (HHW) for disposal 9 a.m.-2 p.m. April 26, RRRASOC MRF – Truck Entrance, 20875 Mapleridge Ave., Southfield. Simple Recycling of clothing and small household items and paper shredding services will be available, www.rrrasoc.org/household-hazardous-waste/what-is-hhw.

• 10th Annual Earth Day Waterford Township Cleanup Event is 8 a.m.-2 p.m. April 26, volunteers are needed, register at www.waterfordmi.gov/earthday. Stop by the front of Town Hall at 5200 Civic Center Drive between 8-10 a.m., April 26.

• Waterford Township Earth Day Shredding Event is 10 a.m.-1 p.m. April 26, at Waterford Township Civic Center Campus, 5200 Civic Center Drive, Waterford Twp., limited to three boxes per household.

• Spring Clean-Up is 10 a.m. May 3, at Oakland History Center, 405 Cesar E Chavez Ave, Pontiac, www.facebook.com/OaklandHistoryCenter.

• The city of Hazel Park and the DTE Energy Foundation are looking for volunteers to help plant 20 trees at Tuski Memorial Park, 900 E. Tucker St. Hazel Park, May 3, starting at 8:45 a.m. Volunteers are asked to wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing and bring a shovel, hard rake, and work gloves if they have them. • The Rochester Regional Chamber announces a ribbon cutting celebrating Rochester Pollinators Mini-Forest, at 2 p.m. May 3, behind Rochester’s Community Garden next to the Rochester Department of Public Works, 1141 Wilcox St., Rochester. Volunteers and city leaders will plant fast-growing native trees and shrubs. • The 21st annual South Lyon Area Creek Cleanup and Earth Day Event is 9 a.m.-1 p.m. May 4, in the parking lot of Michigan Seamless Tube & Pipe, 400 McMunn St., South Lyon. Volunteers are encouraged to wear rubber boots, gloves, a bright long-sleeve shirt and long pants as they work to remove trash and debris from waterways. Safety vests and a noon lunch will be provided. If possible, bring rakes, shovels, trucks and trailers to haul trash. • Rouge River Day is 9 a.m.-noon, May 17, at Heritage Park, 24915 Farmington Road, Farmington Hills. The City of Farmington Hills is seeking 100 volunteers of all ages to help clean up the Rouge River watershed by removing trash and debris from the river, clearing invasive species, planting native wildflowers and maintaining park trails. Snacks and water will be available throughout the morning and a free lunch will be served at noon. Volunteers should dress for outdoor work, including long pants, long sleeves, and closed-toe shoes or work boots.
