Develop Your Action Plans Timeframe for adoption: one year or less Area Notes and Actions Mobile and Tablet Computing Cloud Computing Open Content    At end of session we invite suggestions for Library action plans which you feel you should be taking in the various areas. Feel free to tweet your ideas!
Develop Your Action Plans   Timeframe for adoption 2-3 years Area Notes and Actions Game-Based Learning      Learning Analytics     New Scholarship     Semantic Applications
Develop Your Action Plans    Timeframe for adoption 4-5 years Timeframe for adoption 2-3 years Area Actions Augmented Reality     Collective Intelligence     Smart Objects      Telepresence     Area Notes and Actions Game-Based Learning      Learning Analytics     New Scholarship     Semantic Applications
It’s Here! Time-to-Adoption Horizon : One year or less Cloud Computing Mobiles Tablet Computing Open Content = I’ll discuss Your Thoughts #ili11 #a101 Why not share your thoughts on Twitter on: (a) relevance to libraries and (b) what you should be doing now    
Be Prepared! Time-to-Adoption Horizon : Two-three years Game-based Learning Learning Analytics New Scholarship Semantic Applications  
Keep An Eye On! Time-to-Adoption Horizon : Four-five years Augmented reality Collective Intelligence Telepresence Smart Objects 
It’s Here!: Cloud Computing What? The service / data / infrastructure isn’t hosted within the institution “ I think there is a world market for maybe five computers ” (Watson, IBM)? Implications Policy, legal and cultural assumptions about ownership of IT need addressing Continue what you’ve been doing with Social Web services
It’s Here!: Mobile / Tablets What? Access to the service / data / infrastructure is in your hand; not on your desktop “ In the future the power of the mainframe computer will be in your pocket ” Implications Shouldn’t information professionals be pro-active in using mobile devices? Are you engaging actively with this talk? Are you tweeting, discussing, …? Do you understand changing dynamics of learning?
It’s Here!: Open Content What? Content (including data) which is licensed to permit/encourage reuse “ In the future we’ll be more efficient by reusing existing information ” Implications Particularly relevant for public sector/HE Are you licensing your content with CC? Are you using content provided by others? If not, aren’t you being inefficient?
Open Data Government to ‘force’ Unis to publish data about courses, student experiences, … Builds on Labour’s Open Gov initiative An opportunity to be welcomed? Can take initiative in publishing open data about uses of social media
It’s Coming!: Learning (Academic) Analytics What? Measurement, collection, analysis & reporting of data about learners & their contexts, for purposes of understanding & optimising learning & the environments in which it occurs See also Academic Analytics Implications Evidence-based approaches in education Builds on (open) data Privacy implications - data can be open but anonymised
Library Learning Analytics Library Impact Data Project (#lidp): Funded by JISC as part of Activity Data Programme “ Is there is a … significant correlation between library activity data & student attainment ?” See Dave Pattern / Byony Ramsden’s talk later today to find out! See LIDP project blog ( ) and papers ( )
It’s Coming!: New Scholarship What? Pre-publication of research; non-traditional channels; visualisation of data; new ways of peer-reviewing; non-traditional scholarly objects; … Implications Addressing limitations of current practices & cultural barriers (no rewards for blogging) Beyond Impact: ideas for reward mechanisms for researchers beyond traditional peer-reviewed papers Opportunities for information professionals
Keep Watching!: Collective Intelligence What? Knowledge embedded in large groups Can be explicit e.g. collective intelligence produced Wikipedia Tacit knowledge can be gathered by analysing data from large numbers over time. Analysis of tweets to predict Earthquakes  Flu epidemic (Google search) Elections  Cultural trends …
Collective Intelligence “ Because of the numerous earthquakes and the large number of Twitter users throughout the country, they were able to detect an earthquake with high probability (96% of earthquakes of Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) seismic intensity scale 3 or more are detected) merely by monitoring tweets.” Twitter is full of trivia? Can you afford not to engage?
Collective Intelligence Using Twitter, Facebook status updates, Google search terms, … to: Make predictions: earthquakes, flu epidemics, riots, … Implications for libraries, for society? From the expert (the Chief Librarian, CIO, …) to the crowds Take actions: making plans for evacuation, medical supplies, arresting dissidents?
Collective Intelligence Keeping up-to-date with ‘weak signals’: using Scoop.it to curate stories weeky about Collective Intelligence http://www.scoop.it/t/about-collective-intelligence Note personal curaration for keeping informed is done in the open – openness should be happening now!
Your Action Plans Area Notes and Actions Mobile and Tablet Computing Personal use of mobile phones & tablets in order to gain experiences of new working practices; experiences of accessing library services, etc. Update Acceptable Use Policies to address use of mobile devices. Update Web developments tools and standards to ensure mobile access is treated as ‘first class citizen’. Cloud Computing Staff development to provide better understanding of Cloud Computing concepts and implications. Update Acceptable Use Policies to address use of cloud services. Ensure potential risks are understood as well as opportunities. Develop risk minimisation strategies. Open Content Staff development to provide better understanding of open data as well as open access including licensing issues for open content. Understand personal and organisational barriers to provision of open content as well as consuming open content. Seek ways in which the Library can provide open content.
Your Action Plans Area Actions Augmented Reality     Collective Intelligence     Smart Objects      Telepresence     Area Notes and Actions Game-Based Learning      Learning Analytics     New Scholarship     Semantic Applications
Implications For You What should you be doing: Using the technologies which have arrived (mobile, tablet, Cloud, open content) Ensuring that you have appropriate policies, plans, updated AUPs, etc. Provide staff development/awareness raising for technologies arriving < 3 years Encourage staff with interests in new technologies to continue horizon-scanning “ It’s science fiction? ” Look at how technologies have transformed Library landscape in 13 years of ILI. Will this slow down?

Editor's Notes

  • #3: I should add that the slides are available under a Creative Commons licence (although this may not apply to embedded images). In addition a Creative Commons licence is granted to the presentation of this talk as well as the resources themselves.
  • #14: The Government White Paper on Higher Education was published on 28 June and, as had been trailed in advance, requires Universities to publish data about their services and the student experiences. It should be noted, however, that the move towards greater transparency and openness in the public sector had been initiated by the Labour Government so it may be argued that this provides an opportunity for the sector to demonstrate the value of the services it provides and we should welcome the opopo9rtunity to take a lead in publishing data openly, with the White Paper providing a useful tool to overcome institutional inertia.
