This document outlines the history and future plans of the outofcopyright.eu project. It began in 2009 analyzing copyright terms across 30 jurisdictions and translating them into code to launch the first version of the website. In 2011 additional legal research was conducted. The site was relaunched in 2015 with a new interface and API. Going forward, the project aims to integrate more countries, incorporate the 2011 EU sound recording directive, and integrate the tool into other rights management systems to help determine public domain status of works.
