Why is it so important to prepare a list of
search terms before you start searching?
» you will need more than one database for your search
» you will lose track of your search progress if you can‘t
reproduce all of your searches in different databases
» you could forget important search terms and aspects of
your topic
» you can prepare an overview of all broader and minor
terms, synonyms, and foreign-language equivalents of
your search terms
» you should constantely edit your list during your search
Folie 16Bibliothek
06.07.2018
9
How do you search correctly?
» make sure your search terms aren‘t too general
» truncate with *
» use „_“ for composite nouns
» use search limits
» use English search terms in literature databases
» use key words from previous hits
» if you get „no results“: check your search terms with
respect to typos
Folie 17Bibliothek
How do you get the literature you found in the
catalogue?
» you can see in the catalogue where the book (or the
journal) is located and if it is currently on loan:
› „available for loan“: note call number and take the item
directly from the shelf, have it registered at the service
desk
› „on loan until...“: reserve the item directly in the catalogue,
you can see the estimated return date, you‘ll get an e-mail
as soon as you can collect the item at the service desk
› „available for request“: the item is located in a different
branch (branch library Triesdorf or reserve department)
and can be requested, you‘ll get an e-mail as soon as you
can collect the item at the service desk
› „full text“: you have direct access to the electronic full text

What can you do if the library doesn‘t hold the
requested literature?
Folie 19
» Order suggestion:
› directly in our
catalogue
› in person at our
service desk

What can you do if the library doesn‘t hold the
requested literature?
» interlibrary loan:
› directly in our
catalogue: choose
„database
selection“ and

your search

literature databases listed by topic. The best databases for your topic
are:
» RSWB (architecture, civil engineering)
» Garden, landscape & horticulture index (garden, landscape
architecture, plants)
» Environment complete (life sciences)
» AGRIS (agriculture, landscape architecture, plants...)
» GABA/GAFI (garden, landscape architecture, plants)
» WISO (economics)
» Wildlife & ecology studies worldwide (zoology, ecology)
» Web of Science (science in general)
» e-media platforms (Springer, Elsevier, DeGruyter, Ulmer, UTB)
Folie 21Bibliothek
Where do you find the appropriate literature
databases for your field of interest?
Folie 22Bibliothek
06.07.2018
12
How do you get the articles you found in literature
databases?
» full text options (provided by the database itself)
» : selecting the SFX button (next to the detailed
result) opens a new window offering links to a variety of
library services that will help you get the document:
› available for loan or photocopy (HSWT, TU, Munich
libraries)
› interlibrary loan
› full text options (e-journals, e-books, online sources)
» if there is no SFX button: note the information you have
about the journal in which the article was published
(„source“) and start searching in our online catalogue
Folie 23Bibliothek
How can you manage your search results?
» create your own account (offered by different providers
of literature databases)
» create a list of selected items
» save, print or e-mail your results
» pay attention to the field „source“ in your results (it
contains the journal in which the article was published;
you need this information for interlibrary loan requests)
» the best way: reference management with Citavi
