2. “We travelled to the mountains and
kept climbing until I thought no city
could ever be built this high. At noon I
suddenly saw a beautiful theatre that
was still half-covered with snow…
I spent three wonderful hours at the end
of which I understood why the Pisidians
had built their city so high in the
mountains.”
– Gertrude Bell, 1907
22. “Sagalassos stands as a silent witness to history today, its stones whispering stories of those who
once called it home. Yet, what if life were to return? What if a new community, inspired by the past
but shaped by the present, were to settle among the ruins? Your task is imagining this new
Sagalassos—a place where new life intertwines with ancient ruins. Will you build within the ruins,
carefully weaving new structures into the old? Will you create a settlement beside them, ensuring
their preservation while fostering a new way of living? Or will you design an entirely new form of
cohabitation, where past and future exist in harmony?
Your challenge is to craft a proposal that breathes life back into Sagalassos. Through your spatial
designs for a living environment, you will explore the social and economic potential of this revived
city, considering how people will live, work, and interact with the land. Your vision will shape a future
where history is not merely preserved but lived once more. Your proposal will create an urban
system considering the relationship (between forms and part & whole), flow of (pedestrians) people,
open spaces (public-private hierarchy) all built upon your site-analysis, unit-cluster study and
thematic vision to support a novel socio-spatial identity.”

(Continuity between sites)
There is continuity between the sites in the city, as it can
be seen above. The city is very steep, which creates the
connections through streets with changing heights.

PRE-SITE ANALYSIS
Topography
Sagalassos is a city
located at an altitude
of 1,45 - 1,70 km,
which provided a
natural defence for
the city.
The steep slopes
caused roads and
buildings to be built
on certain planes and
a terracing system.
To get more sunlight,
the city is settled on
the south end.
Due to its slopes and
close geographical
location to the
Mediterranean Sea,
the rain water is
collected under the
mountain and on the
flatter topography
with its limestone
geology.
Climate
The wind is directed from the West and from
the South, which affected the placement of
the settlements such as the Potter’s Quarter.
The buildings mostly broke the wind.
The access to sun from the South makes an
advantage for agriculture.
Vegetation
There are juniper, oak ad cedar
forests around Maquis and low
shrubs are common.
Remains of olive and fruit trees
dating back to the Roman
period have been found.

Edge
The city connects through central and residential green
areas that show continuity through the city. “The Central
Park” around the Odeon is, literally, a central park in the
middle of the city. The paths inside the city connect
through the Odeon.
Point
The terrace house view is to the city and to the Ağlasun
Village. The different perspectives of Sagalassos give
different feelings and understandings of the city, which
was used in the design process with vista points and
terrace houses.
The point tree was used to
make points of entrances
clear for the residential areas.
The edge trees
were used to
show the
orientation of
movement with
the platforms.

The New Centers are designed to reflect the idea of
the Agora, both in how the space is used and how
people interact within it. Like the Agora, they
combine public gathering, exchange, and community
in one place
The theme is mostly based on ruins and how
people used to live, combining the past with
the new city since it is about belonging.
