The Europeana publishing framework. Presentation at the Europeana Aggregator Forum 2015

This document proposes a "differentiated service approach" framework for Europeana to clarify image quality expectations based on how partners want to use Europeana. It outlines 4 levels: 1) As a search engine, recommend 400px previews. 2) As a publication channel, recommend 800px images with direct links. 3) As a distribution platform for non-commercial reuse, recommend 1200px images with direct links and reuse rights. 4) As a free reuse platform, recommend 1200px images with direct links and free reuse rights like CC-BY. The framework aims to make quality expectations clear for partners and encourage provision of higher quality images for more active forms of distribution.

- 20. 2048px 1536px The screen size of a retina iPad is probably a good departure point for determining what “good enough” means when providing images that you want others to enjoy and possibly to re-use.

- 23. Europeana currently exposes digital objects via 3 display modalities 1. Via the portal at www.europeana.eu 2. Via the portal with added Lightbox functionality 3. Via the Europeana API (2) requires a direct link to the digital object, (3) works best with a direct link. also a direct link to an image is required for preview generation. there are (at least) two types of direct links (edm:object and edm:isShownBy).
- 24. Europeana has no clear guidelines for (image) quality. 1. Previews need to be at least 200px (but are not required) 2. There is no minimum size requirement/ recommendation for exposure via Lightbox or via the API. The same is true for the quality of other types of objects. However this issue us most pronounced with images (and to a lesser degree video)

- 27. The taskforce recommends a ‘differentiated service approach’, based on the needs of the data partner with a clear connection between what the partner wants, delivers and gets.

- 34. Communicate: We recommend that you provide previews with a minimum of 400 pixels wide (0.25M). These will be the ones that will show up first and prominently in a search on the Europeana portal.

- 42. Communicate We will showcase images with a Minimum of 800 pixels wide (0.5 M) on a channel. Relevant content of lesser size will remain discoverable.

- 48. Communicate We actively distribute images that are made available under a rights statement that allows reuse (all CC licenses, CC0, PDM & OOC-NC). We recommend images with a minimum of 1.200 pixels wide (1M). Relevant content of lesser size remains available through the europeana portal and the API

Summary If you want to use Europeana as a discovery mechanism that allows users to find your content we recommend you provide a preview of min 400px If you want to use Europeana as a publication channel then you need also need to provide a direct link to the digital objects (we advise a min of 800px) if you want to use Europeana as a distribution platform for re- use you need to provide a direct link to the digital object (we advise min 1200 px) and a rights statement that allows reuse. If you want to use Europeana as a free re-use platform you need to provide a direct link to the digital object (we advise min 1200 px) and a rights statement that allows free reuse.
