Nine Inch Nails have dropped “As Alive as You Need Me to Be,” the lead single from the forthcoming soundtrack to TRON: Ares, the third installment in the TRON film franchise, due in theaters on October 10. The song is the band’s first single in five years.
Though bandmates Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have scored 20 films together, winning Academy Awards for their work on 2010’s The Social Network and 2020’s Soul, TRON: Ares marks the first film score credited to Nine Inch Nails. The album, set for release on September 19 via Interscope Records, will feature entirely original music from the band.
Driven by sharp drums, jagged synths, and (natch) the distant sound of revving engines, “As Alive as You Need Me to Be” delivers all of the vaguely outlined angst we’ve come to expect from Reznor. “Give me something to believe in/All these hands have got a hold of me,” he sneers on the track’s chorus, recalling With Teeth’s “Love Is Not Enough.”
