If you’re anything like us, then chances are you spent a few hours this weekend watching Reese Witherspoon‘s new movie You’re Cordially Invited. After all, there’s something about Witherspoon and Will Farrell together that just feels like comedy gold, right? But, while you may have enjoyed the movie this weekend, Witherspoon gave fans a new gift today: her February book club pick!
On Instagram, the Oscar winner revealed that her new pick is Isola by Allegra Goodman.
“Our February Pick is here, and I can’t stop talking about it!” she wrote in the caption. “Based on a true story, Isola by @allegragoodmanwriter has it all: love, resilience, defiance… I mean, she even fights a bear! 🐻”
“This is easily one of my favorite historical fiction reads yet,” she ended.
Alongside a pic of her with the book in her hands, Witherspoon also posted a video of hers trying to convince someone offscreen to read. it. “What’s crazy is that it’s a true story,” she said. “It’s a girl. It’s a love story. It’s the wilderness. She fights a bear. She survives in the freezing cold and she becomes the hero of her own story.”
Witherspoon then read a snippet from the book synopsis, reading, “An unforgettable story of love, faith and defiance.” “That’s exactly it,” she added
“She really fights a bear,” she said in an outtake. “There’s a whole scene in there where she fights a bear. It’s insane.”
Whether her offscreen friend is convinced or not, we surely are!
In the book description, we find a little more info on our heroine, Marguerite.
“Heir to a fortune, Marguerite is destined for a life of prosperity and gentility,” it reads. “Then she is orphaned, and her guardian—an enigmatic and volatile man—spends her inheritance and insists she accompany him on an expedition to New France.”
“That journey takes an unexpected turn when Marguerite, accused of betrayal, is brutally punished and abandoned on a small island,” the description reveals. “Once a child of privilege who dressed in gowns and laced pearls in her hair, Marguerite finds herself at the mercy of nature. As the weather turns, blanketing the island in ice, she discovers a faith she’d never before needed.”
