SCC

Self-compacting concrete is concrete that flows under its own weight and compacts without vibration. It was developed in 1986 by Professor Okamura in Japan. Self-compacting concrete is made with cement, coarse and fine aggregates, water, and admixtures like superplasticizers and viscosity modifying agents. It has the characteristics of good flowability, no segregation, and the ability to pass between reinforcements and compact under its own weight. Methods to achieve self-compacting concrete include limiting coarse aggregate content, using a low water-binder ratio, and adding superplasticizers and viscosity modifying admixtures.

SELF-COMPACTING CONCRETE (SCC)

History
In 1986 Prof.Okamura developed self-compacting concrete in Japan

What is SCC?
flows under its own weight and gets compacted without vibration

Materials used

Cement Coarse and Fine aggregates Water Admixtures

Admixtures

Chemical admixtures

Superplasticizers Viscosity modifying agent (VMA)

Mineral admixtures

Flyash Slag Limestone powder Silicafume

Characteristics of SCC

Flowability
Absence of segregation

Ability to pass between the reinforcement

Compaction under its own weight

Methods to achieve SCC

Limited coarse aggregate content

Low water binder ratio

Use of Superplasticizers and Viscosity modifying agent

Fresh concrete test

Slump flow test

L box test

U Tube test
V funnel test

Fillingability test

Applications

Holds good in congested reinforcement, inaccessible areas Same way as conventional concrete

Advantages

Shorter construction period Elimination of noise due to vibration Saving in cost of compaction Highly durable concrete Less health related problems
