Lesson 4 - Magnetic Fields

This document outlines the objectives of a lesson on magnetic fields, including understanding magnetic field lines, interactions between fields, and the Earth's magnetic field. It explains how magnetic fields can be visualized, manipulated, and shielded, as well as the significance of Earth's magnetism. Additionally, it includes questions to check understanding of the concepts presented.

MAGNETIC

FIELDS
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this lesson the student
should :
1. Understand and visualize magnetic field
lines.
2. Explore how magnetic fields interact with
each other.
3. Explain the concept of the Earth's
magnetic field and its effects.
4. Investigate how magnetic fields can be
manipulated and shielded.
SHOWING THE FIELD
Magnetic Field Lines
We can describe
magnetic field
lines by imagining
a tiny compass N S
placed at nearby
points.
The direction of the
magnetic field at
any point is the Field is strong where
same as the lines are dense and
direction indicated weak where lines are

POINTS TO NOTE
The Earth as a Magnet

The earth has associated with it a magnetic field, with

poles near the geographic poles.
The pole of a magnet attracted
to the earth’s north geographic N
pole is the magnet’s north
pole. S
The pole of a magnet attracted
to the earth’s south
geographic pole is the http://hyperphysics.phy-

EARTH’S MAGNETIC FIELD
Magnetic field lines point in the same direction that the
north pole of a compass would point.

The more magnetic field lines in a region in space, the

stronger the magnetic field.
Outside the magnet, magnetic field lines point
away from N poles.

Earth’s Magnetism is
generated by
convection currents of
molten iron and nickel
in the earth’s core
*The N pole of a compass would “want to get to” the S pole of the magnet.
 Magnetic Shielding

Magnetic shielding describes a process in which a

magnetic field is excluded from a certain area by

deliberately redirecting its field lines.

 CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

1. What do we call the area around a magnet?

2. What can you use to show someone where the magnetic field is around a

magnet?

3. Draw a diagram to show the shape of the magnetic field around a bar

magnet.

4. Use your diagram to show the direction of the magnetic field.

 CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

5. Where is the magnetic field of a magnet strongest?

6. What is a compass used for?

7. How can you tell that the earth has a magnetic field?
