Phased Array

Phased array is an advanced ultrasonic testing (UT) technique that utilizes multiple element probes and electronic delays to enhance scanning capabilities, including swept, linear, and focused scans. It allows for efficient data collection and analysis, meeting various national and international standards while improving flaw detection and inspection speed. The method offers significant advantages over conventional UT, such as the ability to record data, optimize inspection scope, and perform multiple inspections from a single setup.

Phased Array

Making it work for you.

What is Phased Array?
• Phased array is conventional UT with added advantages.
• Phased array is the use of multiple element probes using electronic delays to
manipulate the sound waves allowing multiple variations of scanning advantages:
• Swept/Sectorial Scans – Looking at a range of angles in one scan.
• Linear/Electronic Scans- Moving the inspection Point along the Probe without manual
manipulation.
• Focussing – Ability to focus at fixed points for increased sensitivity at that point, (useful for
known location.
• Phased array allows for the recordability of data and off site analysis when paired
with encoders.
• Ability to run multiple inspection parameters in one scan.
Swept/
Sectorial Scans

• Swept/Sectorial Scans use time delay in

electronic pulses to allow for beam
steering.
• This ability allows for inspection across a
greater range of angles with one set up
and probe. This meets the requirements
of national and international standards.
• Effective for Weld Scanning, and
inspections in forgings and castings.
Linear/
Electronic Scan

Linear Scanning allows for the use a single

probe to scan across an area at a constant
angle.
This can be done at an angle or 0 degrees.
Linear Scanning is used for both weld
scanning, corrosion mapping and thickness
testing.
Focusing

Phased Array allows for direct focusing, at

particular depths, beam paths or distance in
front of probe.
Focusing is restricted to the Near Field
Length.
Focusing allows for an increase in sensitivity.
Focusing is effective for looking at a
particular area.
Data Collection

With Phased array you have the ability to

record and collect the data of the scan
When attached to an encoder accurate
mapping of location and length is able to be
achieved.
There are multiple view that can be used in
analysis of Phased array data.
• A-Scan (Amplitude Scan)
• S-Scan (Sectorial Scan)
• L-Scan (Linear Scan)
• B-Scan (Time/Distance)
• C-Scan (Plan View)
Phased Array
Phased array does not change the laws
of physics, it assists what you can
achieve with the same laws as
Conventional Ultrasonics.
Phased array can be used to achieve
recordable and measurable results
along multiple views.

Benefits
Phased Array Inspections are;
• Quicker than conventional UT
• Provide the ability to keep recorded data
• Able to conform to all National and International Standards and
Codes.
• Can optimize inspection scope to improve flaw detection
• Allows for swept and electronical scanning from one location where
conventional UT requires multiple probes and manual scanning
• Ability to digitally map corrosion
• Repeatable Inspection Parameters.
