INTRODUCTION

• In 1978 the Alma Ata conference, declared the


need of “health for all” by the year 2000 and
importance of primary health care. Primary
health care includes all areas that play a role in
health such as access to health services
environment and lifestyle. Primary health care is
the attainment of better health services for all. It
is for this reason that the world health
organization.

DEFINITION

• Primary health care is essential health care made


universally acceptable to them through their full
participation and at a cost that the community
and the country can afford.

• COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION :-community
participation is the process by which individuals and
families assume responsibilities for their own health
and welfare and for those of the community and
develop the capacity to contribute to their and
country’s development.
• COVERAGE AND ACCESSIBILITY:-
Primary health care aims to provide health care to
all population living in any geographical area.
• MULTISECTORAL APPROACH:- To
achieving the goals co-ordination with the other
sectors is necessary because no sector can
achieve its goals in isolation.
• APPROPRIATE HEALTH TECHNOLOGY:-
It implies the use of methods, techniques and
equipments which are scientifically sound.
• HUMAN RESOURCE:- The effective
implementation of primary health care it is
essential to make full use of all the available
resources including the human potential of all
the country.
• SERVICES BY COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER:-
Community health workers from a link between
the community people and the health system.
They are given short and simple training to be
able to take care of the simple and basic heath
need of the people.
• REFERRAL SYSTEM:- The patient with severe
condition unable to treat at the primary level should be
referred to the higher/ specialised center for the proper
treatment.
• LOGISTICS OF SUPPLY:- It includes planning
and budgeting of the supplies required, procurement
or manufacture, storage, distribution and control.
• PHYSICAL FACILITIES:-Physical facilities
means the structure and interior surface of a vessel’s
food storage, preparation and service areas,
including accessories such as soap and towel
dispensers, and attachments.
CHARACTERISTICS OF PRIMARY
HEALTH CARE
• Easily available and most essential health
services:-The services delivered within primary
health care should be easily available and should
meet the primary needs of the mass. Health
services which can be easily delivered to every
individual come under primary health care.
• Acceptable for the family and community:- The
services provide in PHC should be easily
acceptable to every individual and community.
The traditional and illiterate community like ours
cannot easily accept any kinds of services.
• Wholesome community participation:-
Communities are encouraged to take the initiation in
identifying their own health and social problem. The
integration of curative, preventive and promotional
health services are given in unified way by the
participation of local mass.
• Community and nation can bear the expenses:-
PHC service is based on local technology and can be
easily managed by the local people and community. It
does not require more infrastructures and complex
technology which can be easily handled by the
national economy.
IMPORTANCE OF PRIMARY HEALTH CARE

• It serves and meets the need of the community.


• It can be delivered by the villagers after simple training
and preparation.
• It based on available community resources.
• It helps to bring the health care into line with local
needs and priority.
• It is fully integrated with community developmental
activities.
• It is an integrated approach of preventive, pro-motive,
curative and rehabilitation services for the individual,
family and community.
ROLE OF NURSE IN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE

Role of nurse in primary health care are as follows:


• Community health nurse work with population of
community. Family and individual the focus is
multiple and promotive health maintaining and
degree of balance toward health.
• The nurses focus on assessment of the impact of the
socio-economical and culture factors affecting the
health.
• The nurses should assessing the health status of
individual and community.
• The nurse should be provide direct care during
illness.
ROLE OF NURSE IN PRIMARY HEALTH
CARE
• The nurse should communicate the community people
and make tenderness about the services of the PHC.
• The nurse should recognize programme related to health
to the promotion of health and prevention of disease.
• The nurse should collaborate with the health of the
community to effectively rather the services.
• Community health nurse should not discriminate the
people because of their cast, age, sex, religion.
• She should maintain report of the care providing.
• Primary goals of nurse in PHC is health education and
disease prevention.
