CANCERAN FESTIVAL Philippine festivals are town fiestas celebrating moments in history that defined identity, community and locality. The festival celebrated all over throughout the year are divided into two, RELIGIOUS and NON-RELIGIOUS or cultural festival. RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS ATI-ATIHAN FESTIVAL ATI-ATIHAN FESTIVAL The mother of all Philippine Festivals, the Ati-atihan festival is widely known not just in the Philippines but across the world. Ati-atihan festival meaning is “to be like atis or Aetas” (Aklan Province’s natives) Place: Kalibo Aklan Date: Every 3rd Sunday of January Sinulog Festival! Sinulog Festival! The Festival is the first of most popular festivals in the Philippines, with every celebration of the festival routinely attracting around 1 to 2 million people from all over the Philippines every year. Place: Cebu City Date: Every 3rd day of January DINAGYANG FESTIVAL DINAGYANG FESTIVAL The most awarded festivals in the Philippines, it is also the most awarded festival in the country, because of its legacy, popularity, and innovation. Place: Iloilo City Date: Every 4th week of January Moriones Festival Moriones Festival -The Moriones is a costume worn by marinduquenos on the western side of Marinduque. Morion means “mask” or “visor”, that covers the wearer’s face, which is part of the medieval Roman armor worn in biblical time. Place: Marinduque Date: Every Holy week- March or April Pahiyas Festival Pahiyas Festival An extravagant and colorful affair in the quiet town of Lucban, held in honor of San Isidro Labrador and is the farmers’ thanksgiving for a rich and bountiful harvest. The townspeople prepare many things for the festival, among them is the all-important, kipling. Date: Lucban, Quezon Place: Every 15th of May Higantes Festival Higantes Festival The hallmark of this festival has to be parades of towering giants made of paper rmache, some as tall as fifteen feet. The use of paper-mache is a reflection of the town’s artistic streak. Place: Angono, Rizal Date: Every 23rd of November Fertility Dance Fertility Dance Feasts are a huge part of parish life in the Philippines, still, in Obando, a town on manila Bay, one church’s feast is famous for an unusual element, a fertility dance that serves as a form of prayer for couples who are hoping to conceive a child. Place: Obando, Bulacan SANTACRUZAN SANTACRUZAN -The Santacruzan is the ritual pageant held on the last day of the Flores de Mayo. A religious parade by the catholic devotees of St. Helena. It is held on the last day of the Flores de Mayo. NON-RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS PANAGBENGA FESTIVAL PANAGBENGA FESTIVAL -Held in the Baguio, in the summer capital of the Philippines, Its English name is the blooming flowers festival, which means, “season of blooming”, is month long annual celebration of a tribute to the city’s beautifully grown flowers, and is celebrated in the month of February. Place: Baguio City Date: whole month of February KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL A festival of thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture and the bounties of harvest and serenity of living that is derived from the Dabawenyong word, “madayaw” or good, valuable and superior in English. Place: Davao City Date: Every 3rd week of August MASSKARA FESTIVAL MASSKARA FESTIVAL emphasizes just that during the celebrations, from the combination of the English word “mass” and Spanish word, “kara” (which means face), this festival is celebrated every third weekend of October, or on the closest weekend to October 19, it dramatizes the steadfast character of the Negrenses and symbolizes what the city of Smiles, Bacolod City, do best, putting on a smiling face even when faced with challenges. Place: Bacolod City Date: Every third weekend of October GIANT LANTERN FESTIVAL GIANT LANTERN FESTIVAL Giant Lantern Festival is an annual Christmastime festival held in the city of San Fernando, Pampanga, Philippines from every December 17 to January 1 of the next year. It is also called Ligligan Parul, which is a Kapampangan phrase that means lantern contest or lantern showdown . Place: San Fernando, Pampanga Date: Every Christmas Eve Philippine Theatrical Forms KOMEDYA OR MORO-MORO Some elements of the “classic” komedya are retained such as the sing- song delivery (diccio or dicho) of lines written in verse, and the story having romance and battle dances (batalya). Date: during all Saint’s day or at other religious festivals. CENAKULO Cenaculo is a staged re-enactment of Christ’s passion and death. It is also known as pasyon y muerte, passion play, centurion, hudyuhan, tanggal, and pamalandong. The word “cenaculo” is derived from Spanish and describes the place where Jesus and his disciples celebrated the Last Supper. Senakulo is a nationwide event that helps devout locals relieve biblical events pertinent to the life, tribulations and ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Date: during Holy Week ZARZUELA Zarzuela is a Spanish musical theatre genre that combines spoken and sung scenes, often with a satirical or topical theme. Zarzuelas originated in the 17th century as a form of entertainment for the royal court. They typically feature stock characters, traditional scenes, operatic and popular songs, and dance. WHERE DO I BELONG? Directions: This game is similar to a multiple-choice type of test, but with an added twist. The teacher will give the name of the festival, and all you have to do is choose whether it is a religious or non- religious festival by falling in line with your chosen answer.
