In the previous lesson, you have learned how to
use the four fundamental operations such as,
MDAS or Multiplication, Division, Addition and
Subtraction.

Let’s Try to focus on Multiplication.

Who wants to multiple the following expression

below:
23 x 6 =
64 x 9 =
78 x 8 =
Today we will learn
to multiply
fractions by using
models.
Activity 1: Read and analyze!
Instructions: Let us read and analyze the problem
below.

Father owns a ¾ hectare piece of land. He planted

1/2 of it with sweet corn. What part of his land was
planted with sweet corn?

How big is Father’s land?

What part of his land is planted with sweet corn?
To solve the problem, let us imagine
that this whole piece of paper
represents one hectare of land.
If this is 1 hectare, how will you represent the 3/4
hectare piece of land?

Note: Fold the paper into 4 equal parts and

shade 3/4.
What about 1/2 of 3/4? How will you represent it?

Note: Fold again the paper into 2 crossing the lines as

shown)

For us to determine easily the product of the

given fractions, we will use color
combination. For this example, we will use
Yellow and Green.
To check the product of the given
fraction.
For the numerator, count the combined
colors which is yellow + green is yellow
green.
For the denominator, count all the boxes.

Steps in multiplying fractions:
Multiply numerator by numerator.
Multiply denominator by
denominator.
Write the product to simplest form.
Consider the other
example.
There is ½ left over pizza on the table.
Allan ate ½ of the left-over pizza. How
much part of the pizza did Allan ate?
Count the number

x = 1
colors (orange) for
the numerator.

1 1 1
2 x 2 = 4
Count all the boxes for the denominator.

Activity 2: BoardWork!

Instructions: On the board, illustrate the following

fractions by using rectangular regions. Solve for
the product.
1. 1/3 x 2/5
2. ¾ x 2/3
3. 3/5 x 3/6
4. 2/3 x 1/5
5. 4/6 x 1/4
Can you multiply fractions by using
models? How?

What have you learned?

Directions: Match the expressions
on the left with the illustrations on
the right. Choose and write the
letter of the correct answer on your
answer sheet.

We discuss yesterday about
multiplying fractions using models.

To further understand the lesson let’s

explore more about visualizing
multiplication of fractions by using
rectangular regions.
Activity 2: Let’s Find the Missing!

Give the fractions illustrated below and

illustrate the product on the given
figure.
Consider the expressions
below.
1. 2/5 of 1/3
2. 2/8 of 3/5
And now, consider the following
illustration below. Write the
multiplication equation for each
illustration and find the answer.

Who wants to show the illustration of the

product on the board?
Performance Task 3: “My Fraction Chart”

Task Title:
“Design Your Own Fraction Multiplication
Poster”

Task Description:
You will create a visual poster that shows
fraction models, just like the colorful chart
example.
Materials Needed:
1. ¼ illustration Board
2. Ruler
3. Pencil
4. Eraser
5. Crayons or colored pencils or
markers
6. Black pen or marker

Activity 3: Fill the Blank!
How do we visualize the multiplication
of fractions?
- Multiplication of fractions can be
visualized by paper folding or by
shading the drawing.
How is visualization done using
drawing?
- First, draw the shaded part of the
fractions in cross directions, then to find
the product, just count the double
Visualizing or using models in
multiplications of fractions is a
valuable skill that can be
applied in various practical
situations in daily life.

Activity 2: Read the problem:

Jenny bought a square, family-sized pizza.

She gave ½ to Mark. Mark ate ¼ of it. What
part of the whole pizza did Mark eat?

Answer the Questions:

Who bought the pizza? Answer: Jenny
What part of pizza was given by Jenny to
Mark?
If you were Jenny, would you also share food
to others?
Let’s analyze the problem.
Remember that the “of phrase” indicate
multiplication.

Today, we will continue learning how to
multiply a fraction by another fraction. This will
help us solve real-world problems involving
measurements, recipes, and sharing quantities.
By the end of the lesson, you will be able to
multiply any two fractions and understand the
logic behind the operation.

Do you still remember the lesson that we

had yesterday?
Remember that in multiplying
fractions by a fraction:

• Multiply the numerators.

• Multiply the denominators.
• Simplify the resulting fraction
if needed.
Example 1:

½×⅓=?
Multiply numerators: 1 × 1 = 1
Multiply denominators: 2 × 3 =
6
Answer: 1/6
Example 2:

⅔×¾=?
Multiply numerators: 2 × 3 =
6
Multiply denominators: 3 × 4
= 12
Simplify: 6/12 = ½
Activity 2: Let’s Solve It!
• What are the steps when multiplying a
fraction by a fraction?

• Why do we multiply the numerators

and denominators?

• How do you know when to simplify?

• When might you use fraction

multiplication in real life?
