TYPES OF
CHEMICAL
REACTION
Synthesis or Combination Reaction
 A reaction in which two or more reactants
combine to form a single product is
known as a combination reaction
 It takes the form of X + Y → XY
Synthesis or Combination Reaction
It takes the form of
A + B → AB
Example 1 ;
2Na + Cl2 → 2NaCl
Example 2 ;
NH3 + HCl → NH4Cl
2. Decomposition Reaction
 A reaction in which a single compound
breaks into two or more simpler compounds
is known as a decomposition reaction.
 This is just the opposite of combination
reaction
Decomposition Reaction

It takes the form of AB → A + B

Example 1 ;
2 H2O2 → 2H2O + O2
Example 2;
CaCO3 → CaO + CO2
Single Displacement
/Replacement Reaction
 A chemical reaction in which a more
reactive element displaces a less reactive
element from its aqueous salt solution
 One element replaces another element in a
compound
Single Displacement /Replacement Reaction
 also called a substitution reaction
It takes the form
AB + X → AX + B
Example 1 ;

2 HCl+Zn → ZnCl2 +H2

Example 2
Zn + CuSO4 → ZnSO4 + Cu
Double Displacement Reaction
 This involves exchanging of ions to form a
new compound
 It is also called a
 metathesis reaction
It takes the form of
AB + XY → AX + BY
Example 1 ;
BaCl2 + Na2SO4 → BaSO4 + 2NaCl

Example 2;

KBr + AgNO3 → KNO3 + AgBr

Neutralization Reaction
 A neutralization reaction can be defined as
a chemical reaction in which an acid and
base quantitatively react together to form a
salt and water as products.
 In a neutralization reaction, there is a
combination of H+ ions and OH– ions which
form water.
 A neutralization reaction is generally an
acid-base neutralization reaction
 Examples: •
 Formation of Sodium Chloride
(Common Salt):
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O
Combustion Reaction
 a reaction in which a substance reacts with
oxygen gas, releasing energy in the form of
light and heat.
 Combustion reactions must involve O2 as
one reactant.
 The combustion of hydrogen gas produces
water vapor:
 All combustion reactions fall
into the pattern ; fuel + O2
CO2 + H2O
 The coefficients of the
balanced equation will change
depending on the fuel.
 The fuel can be almost
anything including methane
(CH4), propane (C3H8),
butane (C4H10), octane
(C8H18) or sugar (C6H12O6)
