IMPORTANCE OF NATIONAL SYMBOLS
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, it is expected that:
1.All will be able to identify each symbol of national importance and tell the message it conveys; and 2.Most will be able to analyze the significance of these symbols to the citizens of the country. 1. IDENTITY Our national symbols give us a unique identity as an independent nation of the world. This brings respect to Nigeria as a sovereign entity, capable of making and enforcing laws within its boundaries. 2. PROMOTE ONENESS Nigeria is a federation of thirty six states, and over 250 ethnic groups. With this diversity, national symbols join the people together and strengthen their allegiance to the country. National symbols promote unity in the face of diversity. 3. VALUES The symbols of a nation show the world what is essential to a particular country, what they pride themselves in. For example, we pride ourselves as a country blessed with mineral and human resources, this is depicted as strength in our national symbols. 4. HIGHLIGHT THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF A NATION We can learn a lot about the history and culture of a particular country through their national symbols. For example, the “Y” icon in the Nigerian coat of arms, depicts that Nigeria is a confluence nation. This means that there is a spot where two rivers meet in Nigeria. This place is Lokoja, Kogi state, where River Niger and River Benue meet to form a confluence. 5. MOTIVATION Whenever the country is going through a hard time such as freedom struggle, the national symbols play a significant role in holding them together and motivating them to fight towards a common goal. With this drive, they can harmonize their efforts, and do great things together. CLASSWORK 1. What are national symbols? 2.
