Learning objectives
At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:
• identify mutually exclusive and not
mutually exclusive events;
• find the probability of mutually exclusive
and not mutually exclusive events; and
• solve problems involving probability.
"FAIR PLAY"
Jacob and Indy decided to play Polynomial
Damath to ease their boredom. They agreed
that they will roll a die to determine who will
make the first move. Both will roll a die and
whoever gets the higher number makes the
first move. Jacob rolls the die and gets a 4.
What is the probability that Indy gets to play
first?
Identify whether the events can happen at the
same time or not.
1. A = tossing a coin and getting a head
B = tossing a coin and getting a tail
2. A = rolling a die and getting a factor of 6
B = rolling a die and getting a prime number
3. A = a heart is drawn from a deck of cards
B = a face card is drawn from a decj of
cardss
4. A = an '8' is drawn from a standard deck of
cards
B = a king is drawn fron a standard deck of
cards
Mutually exclusive events
These are events that cannot occur at the same
time.
• They have no outcomes in
common.
• They do not intersect or they
are disjoint events.
A B P(A or B) = P(A) +
P(B)
P(A or B) where P(A∩B) = 0

Exclusive Events Hint word for mutually and not mutually event is the word
EXAMPLE:
What is the probability of drawing a king or a
queen?
P(drawing a king or a queen) = P(drawing a king) + P (drawing a
queen)
Thus, the probability of drawing a king or queen is
NOT Mutually exclusive events
These are events that can occur at the same time.
• They have outcomes in
common.
• They do intersect or they are
joint events.

Mutually Exclusive Hint word for mutually and not mutually event is the word
EXAMPLE:
If you draw a card from a standard deck of 52
cards, what is the probability of drawing a queen
or a heart?
P(queen or heart) = P(queen) + P(heart) - P(queen and
hearts)
Thus, the probability of drawing a queen or a heart is
*EXAMPLE:
Mavonprime has three P10, four P5, and five P1
coins in her pocket. She takes one coin from her
pocket at random. What is the probability that it
is a P10 or a P1?
IS THIS A
Mutually exclusive
Or
not mutually exclusive
event?
*EXAMPLE: MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE
Mavonprime has three P10, four P5, and five P1
coins in her pocket. She takes one coin from her
pocket at random. What is the probability that it
is a P10 or a P1?
P(A or B) = P(A) +P(B)
P(P10 or P1) = P(10) + P(P1)
Thus, the probability of selecting a P10 or a P1 is or
0.67.
*EXAMPLE:
There are 12 girls, 5 of whom have blond hair, and 15
boys, 6 of whom have blond hair. Find the probability of
selecting a boy or a blond-haired person at the same
time.
IS THIS A
Mutually exclusive
Or
not mutually exclusive
event?
*EXAMPLE: NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE
There are 12 girls, 5 of whom have blond hair, and 15
boys, 6 of whom have blond hair. Find the probability of
selecting a boy or a blond-haired person at the same
time.
P(A or B) = P(A) +P(B) - P(A and B)
P(queen or heart) = P(queen) + P(heart) - P(queen and
hearts)
Thus, the probability of selecting a boy or a blond-haired person is
