The document explains how to interpret hazard maps, specifically focusing on earthquake risks. It outlines important map components such as compass rose, symbols, and color coding, which indicate varying levels of earthquake intensity. The Seismic Design Categories system is introduced to help understand the potential effects of earthquakes based on different color indicators.

Interpreting Hazard Maps
Understanding Family Hazard Maps
and Earthquake Risks What is Map Interpretation? • Map interpretation is the process of reading a map to guide us to a direction or place using different symbols or elements. Important Components of a Map • 1. Compass rose – Shows direction • 2. Title – Tells what the map is about • 3. Symbols – Uses pictures instead of symbols • 4. Legend/Key – Explains the meaning of symbols and colors • 5. Color – Highlights important information • 6. Scale – Shows the proportion of map to real life • 7. Grid Reference – Helps locate specific places Understanding Earthquake Hazard Maps • A Seismic Design Categories (SDC) system helps interpret earthquake hazard maps. Different colors indicate different levels of earthquake risk and potential effects. Earthquake Hazard Colors • - White: Very small probability of damaging earthquakes • - Gray: Moderate intensity shaking • - Yellow: Strong shaking • - Light Brown: Very strong shaking • - Darker Brown: More intense shaking • - Darkest Brown: Strongest shaking • - Red: Near major faults, capable of producing the most intense shaking Earthquake Intensity Levels • This table shows different intensity levels of earthquakes, their shaking effects, and the potential damage they can cause. Higher intensity levels result in greater damage.
