INTRODUCTION TO INTERNET
• E-mail
• 24 hours a day - 7 days a week: availability
• Information
• Online Chat
• Net banking
• E-commerce
• Entertainment
• Software Downloads
Limitations of Internet
• Theft of Personal information
• Negative effects on family communication
• Internet addiction
• Children using the Internet
• Virus threat
Computer Network
• Computer network is a collection of
autonomous computers and devices
connected to each other
• The computers can be geographically located
anywhere. The term autonomous implies that
the computers can function independently of
others. However, the network allows
computers to communicate with each other
and to share resources and information.
Computer Network
• In a short period of time computer networks
have become an indispensable part of
business, industry, entertainment as well as all
aspects of our daily life. The computer that
provides resources to other computers on a
network is known as server. In the network
the individual computers, which access shared
network resources, are known as workstations
or nodes
Importance of Computer Network
Important benefits of computer networks are:
• Resource sharing – sharing program, data, peripheral devices like printers,
scanners, CD-ROM etc.
• Powerful communication system – Computer network provides a powerful
communication system (e-mail, teleconferencing, and video conferencing)
among widely separated people.
• Scalability – Computer network provides ability to increase system
performance gradually as workload grows just by adding more processor in
the network.
• Security – Security starts with the login procedure to ensure that a user
accesses the network using his or her own user account.
• Lower cost.
• Higher reliability.
• Higher flexibility.
Different types of Computer Network
There are three types of computer networks based on geographical area
Switch
Hub
Hardware Requirements for Network
(Wired LAN)
Network switch, hub both are networking device that join multiple computers
together with in LAN.

Difference between LAN,MAN and WAN
LAN MAN WAN
LAN is defined as a On the other hand, MAN is On the other hand, WAN is
computer network that defined as a computer defined as the
links the local areas like network that links the telecommunications
schools, universities, metropolitan areas. network that covers a large
organizations, etc. geographical area.
