END OF

WW2 IN THE
PACIFIC
Start of the nuclear age and
atomic bombs
• WW2 came to an end after Germanys surrender on 7 May 1945
• Japan perhaps still believing they can win the war in the pacific
refused to surrender.
• The allies gave an ultimatum to Hirohito “surrender or the
Japanese forces will be completely destroyed”
• The new president of the USA Harry Truman was not as
sympathetic as Roosevelt had been armed with a WEAPON OF
MASS DESTRUCTION, the atomic bomb!
• Stalin found out about the atomic bomb during a conference
and felt like he was behind in terms of modern weapons.
• The seed for the cold war was then sown
• After 10 days of silence from the Japanese government since the
ultimatum, Truman acted.
• He ordered the first atomic bomb “little boy” to be dropped on
Hiroshima, the city was targeted as it had many weapons factories.
• On the 6th of August 1945 the Enola Gay dropped the bomb on
Hiroshima killing 80000 people instantly, the radiation brought the
death toll to 140000
• On the 8th of August 1945 a million Soviet soldiers invaded Manchuria

• Hirohito still refused to surrender

• On the 9th of August 1945 a second bomb “fat man” was dropped
over the city of Nagasaki, killing 77000 people.
WHY DID THE US DROP THE BOMBS
• To force Japan to surrender and END WW2 in the pacific
as the Japanese refused to.
• To prevent the USSR from establishing influence in the
region
• To prevent the wasting of 2 billion US$ that was used to
build the bomb for WW2.
• To send a message to any country that wanted to
opposed the USA and the West.
• However all it did was start the COLD WAR and
NUCLEAR AGE
Effects of the
atomic bombs
• Because of the lack of warning and the
populations indifference to small groups
of planes, the explosion came as an
almost complete surprise, and the
people had not taken shelter.
• When the bomb detonated a large
mushroom cloud was formed.
• With wind speeds of 980 km/h
• The whole city was destroyed in an
instant
• People were vaporized in seconds turning to ashes due
to temperatures rising to 3980 degrees
• Black radiation rain fell after an hour
• 15000 school children died instantly
• Glass melted in the heat
• The death toll continued rising for many years as
radiation caused cancer.
• Eventually Hirohito surrendered due to the high death
toll
