What is Transformational
Leadership?
What is transformational
leadership?

Transformational leadership is a
leadership model that relies on a
team’s encouragement to realize
overall success. By raising a team’s
morale and self-confidence, the
team can then align itself to an
overall vision or common purpose.

focuses on motivating followers to

work together towards a common
goal. It's based on the idea that
leaders can inspire employees to
change their behaviors and
attitudes.
Transformational leadership

- it refers to a leadership style where

educators, like teachers or administrators,
inspire and motivate their colleagues to
achieve a shared vision for improved student
learning by fostering a positive culture,
encouraging innovation, and supporting
individual growth, essentially leading by
example and empowering others to reach
their full potential within the educational
setting.
transformational leadership" itself is
considered a single leadership style, within
it, three key aspects or approaches can be
identified as: visionary leadership,
charismatic leadership, and servant
leadership; these all focus on inspiring and
empowering followers to achieve a shared
vision, with the key difference being the
specific methods used to motivate and
engage the team.
The tree types of leadership

1. Visionary leadership

2. Charismatic leadership

3. Servant leadership
Visionary Leadership:
Leaders with a clear, compelling
vision for the future, effectively
communicating it to their team
and motivating them to work
towards that goal.

Charismatic Leadership:
Leaders who possess a magnetic
personality and strong
influence, captivating their
followers through personal
charm and enthusiasm.
Servant Leadership:
Leaders who prioritize
the needs and well-
being of their team
members, focusing on
empowering them to
reach their full
potential.
Theory and Research about Transformational
Leadership

People who have transformational leadership

possess four attributes to varying degrees (Bass,
Avolio, & Atwater, 1996).

They are idealized and charismatic (highly liked role

models), demonstrate inspirational motivation
(optimistic about goal attainment), are intellectually
stimulating (encourage critical thinking and problem-
solving), and are considerate (show empathy and
purpose).
Transformational leadership inspires positive changes in
those led and is invested in the success of every single
member involved in the process.

Transformational leaders are full of energy, passion, and

drive. It’s not a surprise that these qualities can be the
things that can make or break an organization.

Transformational leadership style is characteristic of

leaders who focus on supervision and organizational
goals achieved through a system of rewards and
punishments; maintenance of the organizational status
quo.
Transformational leadership, initially
proposed by James MacGregor Burns
(1978) and further developed by Bass
(1985), emphasizes leaders' ability to
inspire, motivate, and encourage
followers to achieve collective goals.
Research consistently demonstrates that
transformational leadership is positively
associated with various outcomes, including:

Increased Employee Engagement and Motivation:

Transformational leaders inspire followers to be
more engaged and motivated in their work.

Improved Job Satisfaction and Morale: Employees

under transformational leaders tend to
experience higher levels of job satisfaction and
morale.
Enhanced Performance and Productivity: Transformational
leadership is linked to improved organizational
performance and higher levels of productivity.

Organizational Citizenship Behaviors: Transformational

leadership fosters behaviors that go beyond job
requirements, such as helping colleagues or volunteering
for extra tasks.

Trust and Psychological Safety: Transformational leaders

build trust and create a psychologically safe environment
where followers feel comfortable taking risks and sharing
ideas.
Innovation and Creativity:
Transformational leaders
encourage their followers to think
creatively and innovate, leading to
new ideas and solutions.
Evolutionary leadership theory
(ELT)
What is Evolutionary leadership theory
(ELT)?
Evolutionary Leadership Theory (ELT) is a
perspective that analyzes leadership through the
lens of evolutionary psychology, suggesting that our
innate psychological mechanisms for leadership
and followership evolved over time to help our
ancestors survive and reproduce in their
environments, meaning we have evolved traits that
make certain individuals more likely to become
leaders in social groups.
Evolutionary theory suggests that both
leadership and followership were important for
the reproductive success of our ancestors.
Evolutionary leadership theory was introduced
by Professor Mark van Vugt, Professor of social
and organizational psychology (VU University
Amsterdam and University of Oxford)
Teacher leadership
What is Teacher Leadership?

The formal definition says that teacher

leadership is when “teachers go
beyond their classroom responsibilities
and assume informal and formal roles
within the school to influence and
enhance instruction and learning for all
students. Teachers who hold the
professional identity as an educator
who demonstrate leadership within the
classroom, school, community and
beyond, either through formal or
informal roles.”
In practice, teacher leadership can take many
forms, but most often it looks like:

* Acting as an advocate for their school and the

needs of students.
* Leading a professional association/union
* Serving as a mentor, coach, peer assistant, or
peer reviewer
* Working in instructional design, assessment
design, or a curriculum planner
* Monitoring improvement efforts and
participating in administrative meetings
* Engaging parent and community participation
Instructional Leadership
What is instructional leadership?
Instructional leadership is leadership that
supports the development of teaching and
learning. It is referred to using different
names including pedagogical leadership,
learning-centred leadership, leadership for
learning, and student-centred leadership.
These terms can be considered under the
broad umbrella of instructional leadership
and represent the specific and focused
practices in which school leaders engage to
intentionally support the development of
effective teaching and learning in schools.
What is unique about instructional leadership is
that, first and foremost, it is tightly connected to
the work of improving learning for students.
Leadership is complex work and can have a range
of purposes. For example, some leadership tasks
may be primarily managerial and not directed
towards improving learning and teaching. The
motivation for instructional leadership is the
improvement of instruction.
For decades, researchers have sought to understand what
instructional leadership is, and there is general consensus
that it includes:

A strong focus on learning

Developing teaching and learning objectives
Holding high expectations of students
Creating and supporting student learning goals
Monitoring learner progress
Protecting instructional time
Coordinating curriculum
Providing instructional support
Supporting teacher learning
Instructional leadership can be conceptualised as leadership
practice that supports effective teaching and learning and
provides guidance and direction for instructional improvementi.
