Writing Skills

Writing Skills

 Writing Skills are specific abilities which help writers to


put their thoughts into words in a meaningful form.
 Good writing skills enable you to communicate your
thoughts, opinions and ideas clearly and effectively.
 Writing skills may be improved through giving exercises
on composition and creative writing. Learners should be
encouraged to arrange their thoughts on a given topic or
conversation.
Let’s do some activities
ACTIVITY 1: INTRODUCING EACH OTHER

 The teacher will divide the students in pairs.


 The students will interview each other based on a series
of questions-answers or keywords.
 After the interview, the students will be asked to write a
short biography of their partners.
ACTIVITY 2: PEN-PALS

 The teacher can assign a role of a postman to a student


and make a post box from a small box.
 Now the class will be divided into pairs.
 Each student in the pair will write a letter to their partner
and post it.
 The postman will deliver the letter to the other student
and he will write back in its response.
ACTIVITY 3: COMPOSITION WRITING

 The teacher will draw a mind map on a given topic.


 The teacher will ask the students to frame the sentences
with the help of given mind map.
 Then the teacher will ask the students to come to the
board and write those sentences in proper order.
 The students will read the sentences loudly.

 India is a land of festivals. Diwali is the most famous Hindu festival.
 It is celebrated with great excitement.
 On this day Lord Rama returned home after 14 years of exile.
 People clean their houses and shops.
 People worship Goddess Laxmi on this day.
 People greet one another and exchange gifts.
ACTIVITY 4: E-MAIL WRITING
 e-mail stands for electronic mail. It is the easiest and the
cheapest way of communication.
Tips for writing an email
 Begin your email with a greeting.
 Begin your email with the reason for writing.
 The message must have a clear and specific purpose.
 Change the paragraph with the change in idea.
 Write your message in a few lines.
 End your email by writing a sign off e.g. thanks, best wishes,
talk soon, take care etc.

ACTIVITY 5: LETTER WRITING
 Letter writing is another mode of conversation. The
following activity has been designed to improve the writing
skills as well as the creative thinking of the students.
 The class will be divided into different groups according to
the number of students.
 The teacher will give brief introduction to Informal letters.
 The teacher will write the format of Informal letter on the
blackboard.
 The teacher will ask the students to write an informal letter
as per the format.

The students will work in groups and write the
letter with the help of the hints of the format.
The teacher will ask any group to read the
letter loudly in the class.
The other groups will jot down the different
ideas if any in their notebooks and incorporate
them in their own letters.
The teacher will ask them to write the final
draft of the letter as a home assignment.
In the given format you can write letter to your
friend congratulating him/her on success; for
not attending birthday party, thanking for the
present; congratulating on someone's birth etc.
Similarly, formal letter writing can be taught to
the students.
ACTIVITY 6: TRACE ME

The teacher will divide the class in two teams.


The teacher will write one slogan of any product
on the board. e.g. ‘The Taste of India’.
Each team will be given a chance to trace the
product.
Marks will be given for each correct answer.
 After playing this activity, the teacher will introduce the topic
‘Advertisements’ to the students.
• Now, again the teacher will divide the students
into groups.
• Each group will be given a product like pen,
toothpaste, washing powder, face cream etc.
• The teacher will ask the groups to write words/
phrases emphasizing that product.
• Each group will be then asked to enact their
product.
• Then frame advertisements on their
notebooks.
ACTIVITY 7: NOTICE WRITING

The teacher will write the heading of a notice on


the board.
Now the teacher will draw five clouds on the
board and write five ‘Wh-Questions’ related to
the notice in them.
The teacher will elicit the answers of these
questions from the students.
The teacher will write the answers in the clouds.
The teacher will make the format of the notice on
the black board.
 The clouds will act as hints.
 Now the teacher will ask the students to
write down the notice with the help of the given
hints.
 The teacher will do the necessary corrections.
ACTIVITY 8: THE TEACHER WILL MAKE TWO
STUDENTS TALK TO EACH OTHER TELEPHONICALLY.
 Hello  Hello! Who is over there?
 I am Preeti, your sister’s freind.  She is away to market.
Please call her. Kindly leave your message.
 Please ask her to meet me outside  That’s all right. I will convey your
the PCA Stadium at 7 in the evening. message as soon as she is here.
I will be waiting for her.
 The teacher will ask the student( the receiver) to write on the
board the message to be conveyed.
 Now the teacher will make required changes and tell the
students to write the message in a proper way.
