What is a Conjunction?

A Conjunction is a word or a group of words


that joins two nouns, phrases or sentences.
Conjunction is also known as ‘Linking Word’.
Examples :
 Rohan and Aaryan went to the mall.
 I like tea but my sister likes coffee.
KINDS OF CONJUNCTIONS
Coordinating
For And Nor But Or Yet So

Conjunctions
 These are used to join two items/clauses of equal importance.
“and” (+) and “nor” (-) are used to show an agreement between items/clauses.
“yet” and “but” are used to show a disagreement between clauses.
“for” and “so” are used to show a reason between clauses.
“or” is used to show agreement or disagreement between items/clauses.

 Remember, when using a coordinating conjunction to join two


independent clauses (complete thoughts) you must insert a comma
before the conjunction.

Example : I want to buy a new jacket, but it is too expensive.


In this example, there are two independent clauses -
#1: “I want to buy a new jacket.” (complete thought)
#2: “It is too expensive.” (complete thought)

Subordinating conjunctions are used to join a dependent clause


(incomplete thought) to an independent clause.

Example : I will be able to drive when I get older.

Common Correlative
Neither…nor Either… or Not only… but Whether… or Both… and

Conjunctions:
Correlative conjunctions are pairs of conjunctions that work
together to coordinate two items.

Example : Both my sister and I will attend the party.


“my sister” first item
“I” second item

The correlative conjunction “both” is used to coordinate the item


“my sister”, while
the correlative conjunction “and” is used to coordinate the item “I”.
