ENVIRONMENTAL

ENGINEERING

AEN 3209 / MEC 4202

Learning outcomes
After successful completion of this course, you should be able
to:
1) Explain pollution and cleaner production concepts.
2) Discuss the role of micro-organisms in environmental
engineering.
3) Design engineering systems that mitigate environmental
degradation.
4) Design engineering systems for water treatment and
sanitation.
5) Assess environmental and social impacts of various
development projects.
Grading
Grades in this course will be as follows:
Continuous assessment – 40%
Tests
Written assignments
Projects
Peer reviewed presentations
Field study reports

Final Examination – 60%

Course outline
 Environmental legislation – relevant national (international) laws

 Understanding the Environmental Impact Assessment

 Introduction to Pollution and cleaner production

 Air pollution – atmosphere, pollutants and causes, effects, mechanisms, control

 Water pollution-types of water pollution, water pollution causes,

biodegradation(anaerobic and aerobic decomposition within the polluted water
sources),
 Solid waste management – characterization, transport, disposal

 Noise pollution-

 Introduction to environmental microbiology

 Wastewater treatment- waste water management

 Industrial, Domestic and sanitation

 Water treatment
Course outline
Environmental Engineering-1
 Applying engineering problem solving skills to environmental situations

 Situations have industrial, human and ecological dimensions

“the core values of engineering is using

technology in the service of humanity”
Environmental Engineering-2
 Traditional Areas

 Water treatment

 Wastewater treatment (energy linkage?)

 Solid waste management (landfill, composting, benefits?)

 Air pollution control (integrate meteorology?!?)

Environmental Engineering-3
 New (evolving) Areas

 Hazardous waste management (Biological removal of nitrates and

perchlorate)

 Bioremediation of soil and groundwater

 Pollution prevention and risk management

 Human and environmental health (medical waste, biosecurity, sanitation)

 Natural resources management (global warming)

 Nonpoint source pollution control (irrigation, construction sites, sewers,

more?)

 Animal waste management

Environmental Engineering-4
 Interdisciplinary profession
 Environmental
 Biological systems
 Civil engineering
 Chemical

 Agricultural/Mechanical/Industrial
 Hydrology

 Geology and soil science

 Microbiology and ecology

 Chemistry/biochemistry
 Law
 Urban planning………………………
Environmental Engineering-5
 Unique

 Responsibility for public health and environment

 Involved in environmental policy making

 Vital for reaching a sustainable world

 More inter linked with non-engineering disciplines

LECTURE SUMMARY
 Looked at the learning outcomes

 Explained the course outline

 Introduced Environmental Engineering aspects

 Explained different environmental engineering inter-disciplines

 Discussed the uniqueness of environmental engineering

ASSIGNMENT 1
 Outline all policies, laws and regulations relevant for environmental
management in Uganda.

 For each of them, summaries in two to three sentences specific provisions

stated in it for environmental management.
