Scientific Research Process

The scientific research process is a sequential yet flexible series of steps that researchers follow, which may involve recycling or skipping certain steps. Key stages include problem identification, theoretical framework development, hypothesis formulation, research design, data collection, data processing and analysis, interpretation, and reporting. This structured approach helps maintain order and clarity throughout the research project.

Scientific Research Process

 Researcher usually treat the research task

as a sequential process involving several
clearly defined steps.
 No one claims that research requires
completion of each step before going to the
next.
 Recycling, circumventing and skipping
occur. Some steps are begun out of
sequence, some are carried out
simultaneously, and some may be omitted.
 Despite these variations, the idea of a
sequence is useful for developing a project
and for keeping the project orderly as it
Steps of Social Research
Steps of a research process
 Sensing or realizing problem:
 Observation or library search or business dilemma.
 Problem Identification:
 Discover the management dilemma
 Define the management question
 Define the research question (s)
 Refine the research question (s)

Consider the statement of Albert Einstein:
 The formulation of the research problem is for more often
essential than its solution, which may be merely a matter of
mathematical or experimental skill. To raise new questions,
new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle
requires creative imagination and marks real advance in
science.
Cont.
 Theoretical framework
 An attempt to integrate information logically so that
the reason for the problem can be conceptualized.
 The critical variables are examined and the
association among them is identified.
 Hypothesis formulation
 Hypothesis are logically conjectured relationship
between two or more variables expressed in the form
of testable statement.
 A hypothesis is a result or outcome that is not yet
evaluated or tested.
 It is a tentative assertion of a relationship between
factors or events that is subject to verification or
rejection.

 Research Design

Devising a plan of the research

It is also a strategy for conducting research.

It describe the general framework for collecting
analyzing and evaluating data etc.

It includes: Sampling design, data collection design,
question and instrument design, pilot testing and
revision of the same.
 Field work or collection of data

Identifying the relevant respondent or source of data

Rapport building with respondent and owner of data.

Execution or administration of data collection
procedure.

Supervising the data collection procedure.

Editing data collection instrument and making some
correction.
Cont….
 Data Processing and analysis
 Data coding
 Data entry
 Data processing/ organization
 Conduction data analysis applying relevant
techniques or methods.
 Interpretation of data/ drawing conclusion
or generalization.
 Research Reporting
 Business Decision.
