ENGLISH LESSON 6 – COMPLEX SENTENCES

YEAR 6
LEARNING OBJECTIVE

Students will be able to...

 Identify complex sentences.

 Construct complex sentences.

 Effectively
use multiple types of
sentences in a single piece of writing.
What are complex sentences?

A complex sentence is a sentence that combines one (1)

independent clause with one or more dependent clauses.

Below, I will explain each highlighted term used in the definition of a

complex sentence.

A clause is a group of words that has both a subject and a verb.

An independent clause forms a complete thought or makes sense

as a sentence standing on its own.

A dependent clause, also called a subordinating clause, does

not form a complete thought and is dependent upon an independent
clause for meaning.
These independent clauses and dependent clauses are joined by
conjunctions to form a complex sentence.

An Example of a complex Sentence.

conjunction

I jumped out of bed as soon as the sun came up.

Independence clause Dependent clause

The conjunction used in complex sentences is known as a

subordinate conjunction.

Subordinate conjunctions indicate the subordinate or dependent

role of the clause in the sentence.
Because he did not know the route well, he drove slowly.

Dependent Clause Independent clause

Notice how the dependent clause begins with a subordinate

conjunction.

Because he did not know the route well …

this clause is a dependent clause because it does not make sense on

its own. It depends on another clause to make sense.

He drove slowly.

This clause on the other hand is an independent clause because it

makes sense or makes a complete thought when on its own.
Some examples of complex sentences;

Because my coffee was too cold, I heated it in the microwave.

Although he was wealthy, he was still unhappy.

She returned the computer after she noticed it was damaged.

Whenever prices goes up, customers buy less products.

Wherever you go, you can always find beauty.

After the tornado hit, there was very little left standing.
Let us take the first example from the previous slide,

• Because my coffee was cold, I heated it in the microwave.

The above complex sentence can be written as

• I heated my coffee in the microwave because it was cold.

Let us take the 3rd example from the previous slide,

• She returned the computer after she realised it was damaged.

The above complex sentence can be written as

• After she realised it was damaged, she returned the computer.

Notice how the clauses in the complex sentences above can be

swapped but will not change the meaning of the statement made.

Again, notice how, when you begin with a dependent clause, the
sentence has a comma in it to separate the clauses.
We have come to the end of our lesson on Complex Sentences. Keep
in mind that complex sentences make use of subordinate
conjunctions in joining the 2 clauses.

We hope you enjoyed the lesson. We will discuss this lesson during
our Google Meet on Thursday.

Thank You.
