Americas Dec.
2013 – ?
Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne virus, is epidemic in the Caribbean. On
December 6, 2013, the first 12 transmitted cases were diagnosed on St.
Martin. By Sep 5, 2014, the Caribbean area reported more than 650,000
chikungunya cases, 37 of them fatal. CIDRAP
Six cases of transmitted chikungunya in the U.S.A. probably are the
beginning of an American epidemic, as over 758 chikungunya cases have
been diagnosed among returning travelers in 45 states.
The two Aedes vectors, Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, transmit dengue,
chikungunya, and West Nile diseases and are prevalent in the southeast
U.S.A. as well as California. Residents of many counties are given free
Mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) in the fight against West Nile disease.

Malaria Deaths:
753,000

The majority of cases (65%) of malaria occur in children under 15 years old. About 125 million pregnant
women are at risk of infection each year; in Sub-Saharan Africa, maternal malaria is associated with up to
200,000 estimated infant deaths yearly. There are about 10,000 malaria cases per year in Western Europe,
and 1300–1500 in the United States. About 900 people died from the disease in Europe between 1993 and
2003. Both the global incidence of disease and resulting mortality have declined in recent years.
According to the WHO, deaths attributable to malaria in 2010 were reduced by over a third from a 2000
estimate of 985,000, largely due to the widespread use of insecticide-treated nets and artemisinin-based
combination therapies.
Malaria is presently endemic in a broad band around the equator, in areas of the Americas, many parts of
Asia, and much of Africa; in Sub-Saharan Africa, 85–90% of malaria fatalities occur. Malaria is prevalent
in tropical and subtropical regions because of rainfall, consistent high temperatures and high humidity,
along with standing waters in which mosquito larvae readily mature, providing them with the
environment they need for continuous breeding.

Reliable Electric Power is Required 24/7
to Power Air Pumps and Water Pumps.
The Savonius Vertical Air Turbine is the least efficient
wind turbine, but has maximum torque. As efficiency is
not important, a concept using off the shelf components
that utilize the torque advantage follows.

Clean water must be added periodically.

Clean, potable water must be added to replace water
absorbed by the plants and lost by evaporation. Water
is available from the air, even in deserts. The higher
the humidity, the more water available. Using thermal
cooling and solar power with battery bank, pure water
can be obtained. See Gemini Concept.

Namibian Desert Water Beetles
To drink water, the Stenocara gracilipes
stands on a small ridge of sand using its
long, spindly legs. Facing into the
breeze, with its body angled at 45°, the
beetle catches fog droplets on its
hardened wings. Its head faces upwind,
and its stiff, bumpy outer wings are
spread against the damp breeze. Minute
water droplets (15-20 µm in diameter)
from the fog gather on its wings; there
the droplets stick to hydrophilic (water-
loving) bumps, which are surrounded by
waxy, hydrophobic troughs. Droplets
flatten as they make contact with the
hydrophilic surfaces, preventing them
from being blown by wind and providing
a surface for other droplets to attach.
Accumulation continues until the
combined droplet weight overcomes the
water's electrostatic attraction to the
bumps as well as any opposing force of
the wind; in a 30 km/h breeze, such a
droplet would stick to the wing until it
grows to roughly 5 mm in diameter; at
that point it will roll down the beetle's
back to its mouthparts.
The Warka Tower
(The Night Collector)

The rigid outer housing of each tower is comprised of lightweight and elastic juncus stalks, woven in
a pattern that offers stability in the face of strong wind gusts while still allowing air to flow through.
A mesh net made of nylon or polypropylene, which calls to mind a large Chinese lantern, hangs
inside, collecting droplets of dew that form along the surface. As cold air condenses, the droplets roll
down into a container at the bottom of the tower. The water in the container then passes through a pipe
to users. Using mesh to condense water to obtain potable drinking water isn't a new concept. Peruvian
Indians use mesh to condense water from Pacific Ocean breezes. But Vittori's invention yields
more water, 25 gallons daily, at a lower cost, than earlier concepts. Read more:

water.
Simply circulating the liquid in the loop system, without a compressor, can cool/heat fish tank water.

The earth absorbs solar energy, maintaining a nearly constant annual temperature (the average mean air
temperature for that location) approximately six meters below the surface at any geographic location. For
practical purposes six feet (2 meters) deep temperature will suffice. An underground loop system utilizes
this constant temperature to exchange energy between your system and the earth as needed for heating
and cooling. In winter, water circulating inside a sealed loop absorbs heat from the earth and carries it to
the fish tanks. If desired, a compressor can increase the moderate temperature and send warm air to your
home system.
In the summer, the system reverses and expels heat from your aquaponics system to the cooler earth via
the loop system. This heat exchange process is natural and an ingenious, efficient way to maintain a
constant temperature in your home and aquaponics system. Power is needed to pump the coolant.
Mosquito Vectors of Deadly Diseases
Mosquitoes are territorial, rarely flying farther than 1 mile from
their hatching location, so aquaponics can provide a mosquito
free zone around homes.
A program to install an aquaponics installation at almost every
home can protect a village, a city, a country, and eventually the
world. Mosquito fish may be mankind’s salvation.
And the aquaponics installation feeds the living! The cost is low,
the results:
* Eradicate mosquitoes
* Eradicate deadly diseases
* Eradicate mosquitoes year after year at no additional cost
* Feed the living organic fruits and vegetables

100 square feet of grow beds can feed a family of four with less
water, no soil, no fertilizers, no chemicals, no pesticides, no
fungicides, and no contamination. Aquaponics can eliminate
starvation by feeding the living where agriculture is impossible.

Work with nature. Teach a man to fish.
