MR. FRANCIS M. ORONAN
The Digital WhizKids Computer
D WHIZ Literacy Program (DWCLP) was
IN COMPUTER ANIMATION designed and developed to
enhance students' productivity and
creativity through computer
technology. It aims to equip our
students with the computer skills
and knowledge needed to be
competent individuals in the
information age. The entire DWCLP
series consists of books intended
for preschool to highschool levels.

INTRODUCING ADOBE FLASH FOR
COMPUTER ANIMATION
CHAPTER OVERVIEW
You must be very eager to start
creating your first animation.
However, if you jump straight in and
start creating animations without
prior knowledge or training about the
software, you'll waste time and effort
in the process, or worse, end up with
unusable work.

RASTER GRAPHICS
Use a set of bits called bitmaps that represent a grahic image. Each
bitmap-based image is laid onto a grid. The size of the grid is based on
the image's resolution.
Computer Education 9
EXAMPLE
A bitmap-based image of 1 inch x 1
inch with a 600 dots per inch (dpi)
resolution would be defined as 600
x 600 pixels per square inch. Hence,
a bitmap-based image is like a
mosaic of pixels with each pixel
holding a specific color value.
Filenames for bitmap-based image
have extensions
like .PSD, .JPG, .GIF, .TIF or .BMP
VECTOR GRAPHICS
Are computer images that are stored in memory as lines rather than as
a series of dots or bits, thus allowing it to be rotated or proportionally
scaled. These images are suitable for illustrations that require precise
measurements as they can be easily scaled due to their mathematical
nature.
Computer Education 9
EXAMPLE
Vector images can easily be
rendered to different sizes or
transformed in other ways without
worrying about the image resolution
and pixelation. File names for vector
based images have extensions such
as .EPS, .AI, .CDR or .DWG
Many websites have various contents that were created using Adobe
Flash technology. To determine if content was created using Flash, all
you have to do is right-click on the object, and then look at the menu if
it displays "About Adobe Flash Player" at the bottom.
ADOBE FLASH FILES TYPES
LIKE MOST PROGRAMS, FLASH SOFTWARE SUPPORTS A VARIETY OF FILE TYPES WITH INDIVIDUAL
PURPOSES
FILE DESCRIPTIO
EXTENSION N
.FLA The main supported file type of Flash used to create artwork and animations.
It is similar to the relation of .doc for Microsoft Office Word and .xls for
Microsoft office Excel
.SW Read as "swift" and formerly known as ShockWave Flash. It denotes that the
file was created using Flash technology or commonly known as Flash movies
F or Flash applications, hence, it requires Adobe Flash Player to view. This
could be a cartoon or an Internet application
.FLV
.FLV The video files for Adobe Flash Player. These are the actual movie files
created by Flash.
.AS Also known as the ActionScript file. The file that contains interactive codes
used to control Flash applications.

Accessibility Features of Flash
Rich Media Content
Flash content can be viewed on nearly all computers. In general, Flash technolgy may be
one of the most widely available technologies used on the web. Content that can be layed
back on displayed by almost all computers make the technology versatile.
The multimedia nature of Flash can be used to deliver content through
various media: graphics, text, video, audio, etc. Its flexibility provides the
power to present web content in a fully accessible manner. Below are
some examples of how Flash increases accessibility:
• Flash can present content through audio because of its audio capabilities.
DESPITE THE ABILITY OF FLASH TO CREATE RICH MEDIA
CONTENT, THERE ARE SOME ISSUES REGARDING
ACCESSBILITY. TO MAKE YOUR CONTENT FULLY
ACCESSIBLE, HERE ARE SOME STRATEGIES:
• Provide synchronized captions for any audio that conveys content.
• Be consistent
