The document discusses greenhouse gases (GHGs), their role in trapping heat in Earth's atmosphere, and how human activities have increased their concentrations, leading to global warming. It outlines the main greenhouse gases, the enhanced greenhouse effect caused by human actions, and the resulting impacts on climate and ecosystems. Solutions for mitigating global warming include transitioning to renewable energy, policy changes, and promoting sustainable practices.

Gases
Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are gases in
Earth's atmosphere that traps heat. While
the presence of these gases is natural and
essential for maintaining Earth's
temperature, human activities have caused
their concentrations to rise significantly,
leading to global warming and climate
change.
Most Prominent Greenhouse Gases

CO₂ N₂O
Carbon Dioxide Nitrous Oxide

CH₄ F
Methane Fluorinated
Gases
Sunlight Solar energy from the sun
Reaches enters the Earth's
atmosphere in the form of
Earth visible light and ultraviolet
radiation. Some of this
energy is absorbed by the
Earth’s surface, warming it.
The Earth’s surface then
radiates the absorbed
energy back into the
Earth
atmosphere as infrared Radiates
radiation (or heat).

atmosphere, known as
greenhouse gases absorb

Trap Heat Earth’s surface. This
process prevents the heat
from escaping into space
entirely.
This trapping of
Warmt heat creates a
"blanket" effect,
h is keeping the Earth
Retaine warm enough to
d sustain life.
FUN FACT!
Without the greenhouse
effect, Earth's average
temperature would be about
-18°C instead of the current
15°C, making it too cold for
most forms of life.
Enhanced Greenhouse
Effect
Problems arise when human
activities amplify the greenhouse
effect, resulting in what is called the
enhanced greenhouse effect.
Increased levels of greenhouse gases
mean that more heat is trapped,
causing the planet to warm
excessively.
Human activities such as burning fossil fuels,
deforestation, and agriculture have increased the
concentration of these greenhouse gases, intensifying
the greenhouse effect.
Global Warming
Global warming refers to
the long-term increase in
Earth’s average surface
temperature due to rising
levels of greenhouse gases
(GHGs) in the atmosphere.
Causes of Global
Warming
Global warming is
primarily driven by
anthropogenic (human-
caused) factors such as
the following.
Greenhouse Gas
The Emissions
primary driver of global
warming is the release of GHGs
into the atmosphere. These gases
trap heat and prevent it from
escaping into space
Deforestati
on
Forests act as carbon
sinks, absorbing CO₂
from the atmosphere.
Deforestation, often
driven by agriculture
and urbanization,
reduces this capacity
and releases stored
carbon back into the

tion

revolution marked
the beginning of
large-scale
emissions due to
the burning of fossil

Agriculture
Modern agricultural
practices contribute to
global warming
through:
• Methane emissions
from livestock
digestion.
• Nitrous oxide
emissions from
synthetic fertilizers.
• Deforestation for
agricultural land

expansion.

Rapid urbanization increases

energy demand, transportation
emissions, and waste production,
further exacerbating global
warming.
