Environmental impact of

opening up an iron mining

project in a forest area

Presented by: Team Strategic Lens

Problem Statement
An iron ore mining project is proposed to be opened up to
extract a rich iron ore deposit. It is a hill top deposit located
within a dense forested region. The area at present is virgin with
respect to any industrial activity. A narrow spring flowing from
the adjacent hill is the source of water to the local tribal
inhabitants residing in a few hamlets. While the project
promises significant economic benefits, including job creation
and local infrastructure development, it also poses substantial
environmental risks that need to be carefully assessed and
mitigated.

Key Environmental Concerns and Mitigation
Approaches
Deforestation and Biodiversity Loss Water Resource Contamination

Mitigation: Mitigation:

• Implement Selective Mining to minimize land • Deploy Advanced Water Treatment Technologies
• disturbance.
Use Drone-Based Environmental Monitoring to track (e.g., Reverse Osmosis, Biofiltration) to prevent
deforestation and habitat loss. • contamination.
Use Closed-Loop Water Systems to minimize
• Implement Biodiversity Offsetting programs freshwater usage and wastewater discharge.
(reforestation and conservation efforts). • Install Sedimentation Ponds to capture and treat
mine runoff before it reaches the natural spring.
Additional Environmental
Concerns
Air Pollution (Dust & Emissions)
Mitigation:

• Use Water Sprinkler and Fogging Systems to control dust.

• Equip mining vehicles with Low-Emission Engines or switch to
Electric Mining Equipment.
• Deploy Air Quality Monitoring Sensors for real-time pollution
tracking.

Soil Degradation &

Erosion
Mitigation:

• Implement Terracing and Vegetation Cover strategies to

• prevent erosion.
Use Geotextiles and Soil Binding Agents to stabilize soil around
excavation sites.
Socio-Economic Concerns and Solutions
Displacement of Indigenous Communities
Solution:

• Engage in Participatory Resettlement Planning with

fair compensation.
Solution:
• Develop Alternative Livelihood Programs like
agroforestry or eco-tourism. • Ensure Community Water Security by providing
alternative water supply systems.
• Implement Community-Driven Water Management
projects.
Employment and Economic Development
Local Hiring Prioritization Skill Development
Offer Local Hiring Prioritization for mining jobs. Provide Skill Development & Vocational Training

for both skilled and unskilled positions. with mining-related skills and other transferable
abilities.
Initiatives Expected from the
Mining Company
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) before project
implementation.
Comprehensive study to identify and mitigate potential environmental risks.

Sustainable Mining Practices with minimal ecological

footprint.
Implementation of best practices to reduce environmental damage during
operations.

CSR Programs focusing on community welfare (education,

healthcare, clean water).
Investment in local development to improve quality of life for affected
communities.

Transparent Stakeholder Communication to address

community concerns.
Regular dialogue with local communities to ensure their voices are heard.
Initiatives Expected from the Mining Company Before
Implementation
Before starting the iron ore mining project, the company should take several proactive steps to ensure environmental
sustainability, community well-being, and long-term economic benefits. These include:

Infrastructure
Sustainable Planning Development
Community Consultation Developing comprehensive Creating necessary facilities with
Environmental Impact Engaging with local tribes to mitigation strategies minimal impact
Assessment understand concerns
Thorough evaluation of potential
environmental effects
Comprehensive Environmental
Impact Assessment
Purpose
To identify potential environmental risks and develop strategies
to mitigate them.

Steps Involved
• Assessing air, water, and soil quality before mining begins.
• Predicting potential deforestation and biodiversity loss.
• Modeling water contamination risks and developing control
measures.

Outcome
A detailed mitigation plan that ensures compliance with
environmental regulations.
