Problem Solving about Sequences

The document presents various problems involving sequences, including distance fallen by an object, salary increases, depreciation of a machine, sales projections, savings growth, and the distance traveled by a bouncing ball. Each problem is solved using arithmetic or geometric sequences, providing step-by-step calculations and final results. The examples illustrate practical applications of sequences in real-life scenarios.

An object is dropped from a jet plane and falls 32 feet during the first
second. For each succeeding second, it falls 40 feet more that the
distance covered in the preceding second. How far has it fallen after 11
seconds?
𝑎 1=32 𝑓𝑡 . 𝑑=40 𝑓𝑡 . 𝑛=11 𝑠𝑒𝑐 .

𝑛=1 32 𝑓𝑡 . 𝑎 𝑛 =𝑎 1+ ( 𝑛− 1 ) 𝑑
𝑛=2 32+ 40=72 𝑓𝑡 .
𝑎 11 =32+ ( 11 − 1 ) 40
𝑛=3 112 𝑓𝑡 .

𝑎 11 =32+(10)( 40)

Therefore, the object has

𝑎 11 =32+ 400
fallen 432 feet after 11
seconds.
𝑛=11 ? ? ? 𝑓𝑡 .
𝑎 11 =432 𝑓𝑡 .
Joan started a new job with an annual salary of P150,000 in 2007. If she
receives a P12,000 raise each year, how much will her annual salary be
in 2017?

2007 𝑛=1 𝑎 1 150,000 𝑑=12,000

2008 𝑛=2 𝑎 2 162,000
𝑎 𝑛 =𝑎 1+ ( 𝑛− 1 ) 𝑑
2008 𝑛=3 𝑎 3 174,000
𝑎 11 =150,000+ ( 11 − 1 ) 12,000

𝑎 11 =150,000+ ( 10 ) 12,000

𝑎 11 =150,000+120,000
𝑎 11 =270,000
2017 𝑛=11 𝑎 11 ? ? ? ,? ? ?
Therefore, Joan’s annual salary in 2017 will be
P270,000.
Rico bought a machine worth P29,000. If it depreciates in value by P500
each year, what will be its value at the end of 10 years?

𝑎 1=29,000 − 500=28,500 𝑎 𝑛 =𝑎 1+ ( 𝑛− 1 ) 𝑑
𝑑=−500 𝑎 10 =28,500 + ( 10 − 1 ) (− 500)
𝑛=10 𝑎 10 =28,500 +( 9)(−500)
𝑎 10 =28,500 +(− 4500)
𝑎 10 =24,000

Therefore, its value after 10 years will be P24,

000.
A sari-sari store sells P1,000 worth of products during its first week.
The owner of the sari-sari store has set a goal of increasing his weekly
sales by P500 each week for the next 10 weeks. If we assume that his
goal is met, find the total sales during the first 11 weeks this store is in
operation.
𝑛
𝑎 1=1,000 𝑠11 =¿ [ 2 𝑎 1 + ( 𝑛 − 1 ) 𝑑 ]
2
𝑑=500
𝑛=11 𝑠11 =¿ 11 [ 2( 1,000)+ ( 11 −1 ) 500 ]
2

𝑠11 =¿ 5.5 [ 2,000+ 5,000 ]

Therefore, total sales for the
first 11 weeks of the store will
𝑠11 =¿ 5.5 [ 7,000 ]
P38,500.
𝑠11 =¿ 38 , 500
Michael saved P50 in January. Suppose he saved twice the amount he
saved the previous month. How much does he need to save on

A rubber ball is dropped on a hard surface from a height of 80 feet and
bounces up and down. On each rebound, it bounces up exactly one-half
the distance it just came down. How far will the ball have travelled if
you catch it after it reaches the top of the seventh bounce?
