DICTIONARY
A Dictionary is a book that
provides definitions, spelling,
pronunciations, etymology,
parts of speech, guide words
and sometimes syllables of
words.
USES OF
DICTIONARY
We use dictionary to look up
words.
 You may use dictionary to find
the meaning of words.
 To look up for spelling and
pronunciation of words.
STEPS FOR USING A DICTIONARY
1. Look at the first letter in the word and turn in
the dictionary section for that letter.
2. Use a guide words at the top of each page
and what you know about the alphabet to
help you find the word.
3. Read definitions. if the word has more than
one meaning, decide which meaning you
think fits in the students.
4. Try that meaning in the sentence to see if it
make sense.
1. Guide Words - The words listed in a
dictionary are listed in alphabetical order,
letter by letter.

2. Main/Word Entries - are the words that


are explained in a dictionary. this words
appear in boldface (dark) type.
3. Parts of Speech - The dictionary
uses nine abbreviations for the
parts of speech.

n. - noun conj. -
conjunction
pron. - pronoun adj. -
adjective
v.i - intensitive Verb adv. - adverb
v.t - transitive verb prep. -
4. Restrictive labels - Subject labels tell
you that a word has a special meaning
when used in a particular field.

5. Spelling - Not knowing how to spell a


words can make it difficult to find in the
dictionary, but not impossible. You will
be surprised at how quickly you can
find most words by following the
sounded out spelling.
Directions: Write FACT if the statement is true and
BLUFF if false. then write the word that make it
wrong.
1. The dictionary uses seven abbreviations for
the parts of speech.

in a dictionary.
3. Etymology shows the origin/history of a word.
4. Restrictive labels tells you that a word does’nt
have a special meaning.
