Example
A girl walks home from her office in 5 min which is 300 mts away.
If she increases her speed by 3.6 km/h. Then what is the time taken
by her?
Example
A bus travels at 50 km/h. But due to stoppages the covered only
40 km in one hour. So how much time the bus stopped for?

Total loss is 10 km out of 50 km per hour

So, loss = hr
= hr
= X 60 min
= 12 min
The bus stopped for 12 min in that hour
Example
Manav drives from his home to the nearest metro station at an average
speed of 40kmph.From the station he boards a train that takes him to his
office at a speed of 80kmph.The entire distance covered by him in 52 km and
the entire journey took him 1 hour. Find the distance between the station
from where he boards the train and his office.

+ =1
X=24
Example
The speeds of two persons are in the ratio 5 : 2. If the first person
takes 45 minutes less to cover a distance, how many minutes would
the second person take to cover the same distance?

Speed ratio
A B
5 : 2

Time ratio
A : B
2 : 5 3 unit = 45 min
30 : 75
min min So, the 2nd person can cover it in 75 min
ExampleDistance = Speed X Time
While going at 4/5th of the speed a man reaches 25 min late.
Then what is the normal time taken by him?

4 Speed ratio
sxt = 𝑠X ( t + 25) 1 : 4/5
5
5 : 4
t = x ( t + 25 )
5 t = 4 t + 100 Time ratio
t = 100 4 : 5
1 unit = 25 min

So, 4 unit of normal time

taken is 4x25 = 100 min
ExampleDistance = Speed X Time
A person travels at 35 kmph, he realised that he will be late by 1 hour
and if he increased his speed by 15 km/h he will reached 30 min
early. Then what is the distance?
ExampleDistance = Speed X Time
At normal speed a man reaches office 6 min late. When he increases
his speed by 20% he reaches the office 2 min early. Then what is the
normal time taken by him?
Speed ratio
100: 120
5 : 6

Time ratio
6 : 5
1 unit = 8 min

So, 6 unit of normal time

taken is 6 x 8 = 48 min
Example
If a man travels at a speed of 25 km/h, he reaches 10 min early
and when he decreases his speed by 5 km/h he reaches 15 min late.
What is the…
(1) Distance (2) Optimum time (3) On time reaching speed
Distance = Speed X Time
Speed ratio D = 25 km/h X =
25 : 20
= km
5 : 4
Time ratio
4 : 5
Speed = Distance / Time
1 unit = 25 min
S= /
So, 4 x 25 : 5 x 25 = X
100 min : 125 min = km/h
10 min early : 15 min late
110 min : 110 min
ExampleDistance = Speed X Time

Example
Two car starting from point A and point B towards Point B and point
A respectively, the distance between point A and point B is 198km.
They meet after 8hrs from the point of starting. If the velocity of the
car moving from point A to B is 12kmph more than the velocity of the
car moving from point B to A. Then the velocity of the faster car is?

8 X + 8 (X+12) = 198
8 X + 8 X + 96 = 198
16 X = 102
X = 6.375 Speed of the slow car

Speed of the faster car = slow car speed +12

= 18.375 km/h
Concept: Relative
speed
Relative speed:
• It’s nothing but the relation between the speeds of two objects at
motion or at rest.
• When these two objects are moving at same direction the
relative speed is the difference between their speeds.
• When these two objects are moving at opposite direction
the relative speed is the sum of their speeds.

2 friends were at their respective homes. The distance between their
homes is 1000 km. They are planning to meet each other. So they
started at same time. One guy travels at 100 km/h and the other guy
travels at 150 kmph. In how many hours they will meet each other?

<- 1000 km ->

150 km/h + 100 km/h

250 km/h

Time taken will be = _________ = 4 hrs
250 km/h

1000 km meeting will be = _________ = 8 hrs
meeting will be = _________ = 4 hrs

Two trains enter a tunnel 200 km long, traveling at 700 kmph and
500 kmph respectively at the same time from opposite
directions. As soon as they enter the tunnel a supersonic bee
flying at 1500 kmph starts from one train and heads toward the
other one. As soon as it reaches the other one it turns around
and heads back toward the first, going back and forth between
the trains until the trains collide in the middle of the tunnel. How

of 83 seconds. If the velocity of the sound is 332 m/s, then find the
speed of tiger?
