GROUP 1 DDM

The document explains the Cartesian product of sets, which is a set formed from two or more sets containing all ordered pairs of elements from the sets. It includes mathematical formulations, theorems regarding the properties of Cartesian products, and examples demonstrating how to calculate them. Key points include that the product of two sets is not commutative and the number of elements in the product is the product of the number of elements in each set.

PRODUCT
OF SETS

WHAT IS THE CARTESIAN PRODUCT OF
SETS?
The Cartesian product is a set formed from two or
more given sets and contains all ordered pairs of
elements such that the first element of the pair is
from the first set and the second is from the
second set, and so on
WHAT IS THE CARTESIAN PRODUCT OF
SETS?
The ordered pair in the cartesian product of sets point
towards the fixed representation of the value. That is if A
and B are two non-empty sets, then the cartesian product
of sets A and B is the set of all ordered pairs of
elements/components from A and B. In terms of
mathematics formulated as:

A × B = {(a, b) : a ∈ A, b ∈ B}

where a is member of A and b is member of B.

THEOREM
• If set A has n elements and set B has m elements,
then the product of sets A x B has n times m
elements, which is nm elements.

• If either A or B is the empty set, then A x B is also

the empty set. If either A or B is infinite and the
other is nonempty then A X B is infinite.

• Cartesian product of two sets is not commutative

AxB ≠ BxA, unless A = B or one of the factors is
empty.
EXAMPLE 1

Let, A = {1,2} and B = {a, b, c}

A x B = {(1, a), (1, 6), (1, c), (2, a), (2, b), (2, c)}
B x A = {(a, 1), (a, 2), (b, 1), (b, 2), (c, 1), (c, 2)}

Note that A × B is not equal to B X A, except in

some cases, such as if A = B. The cardinality of A × B
satisfies the equation
n(AB) = n(A) x n(B)
EXAMPLE 2

If P = {2, 3, 5} and Q = {o, t, i, x}

determine: P × Q and n(P × Q)
Solution:
a. P × Q = {(2, o), (2, t), (2, i), (2, x), (3, o), (3,
t), (3, i), (3, x), (5, o), (5, t), (5,
i), (5, x)}
b. n(P × Q) = n(P) × n(Q)
Cartesian Products of Two Sets

Example: A = {and B = {, , , } are two sets. The

Cartesian product of A and B can shown as:

Set B Set A
