Grade7_Algebraic_Expressions

This document covers the fundamentals of algebraic expressions, including the distinction between variables and constants, and how to translate verbal phrases into algebraic forms. It also explains how to evaluate these expressions by substituting values for the variables. The lesson concludes with practice questions to reinforce understanding.

Understanding

Algebraic
Expressions
DR. THESS W. NEPOMUCENO
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students
will be able to:
• Distinguish a variable from a
constant in an algebraic expression.
• Translate verbal phrases into
algebraic expressions.
• Evaluate algebraic expressions
given the value(s) of the variables.
Introduction to Algebraic
Expressions
An algebraic expression is a
mathematical phrase that includes
numbers, variables, and operations
but does not contain an equal sign
(=).
Examples:
• 3x + 5
• 2a - 7b
• 4m² + 9n - 2
• Variables
A variable is vs. Constants
a symbol (usually a
letter) that represents an unknown
value.
• Example: In 3x + 2, 'x' is the
variable.

• A constant is a fixed value that

does not change.
• Example: In 3x + 2, '2' is the
constant.
Translating Verbal
Phrases
Some commonto Algebraic
word phrases and
Expressions
their algebraic equivalents:

• The sum of a number and 5→ x +

5
• Twice a number decreased by 3 →
2x - 3
• The product of a number and 7 →
7x
A number divided by 4 → x / 4
Evaluating Algebraic
Expressions
Substitute the given value(s) for the
variable(s) and simplify to evaluate
an algebraic expression.

Example:
• If x = 3, evaluate 4x + 2.
Solution: 4(3) + 2 = 12 + 2 = 14.
Practice Questions
1.Identify the variable and constant in
the expression: 5y - 8.
2. Translate into an algebraic
expression: 'Three times a number,
increased by 6'.
3. Evaluate the expression 2a + 3b
when a = 4 and b = 5.
Summary
• Variables represent unknown
values, while constants have fixed
values.
• Verbal phrases can be translated
into algebraic expressions.
• To evaluate an expression,
substitute values for variables and
simplify.
