Translation
11- O believers! Do not let some ˹men˺ ridicule others, they may be better than them, nor
let ˹some˺ women ridicule other women, they may be better than them. Do not defame
one another, nor call each other by offensive nicknames. How evil it is to act rebelliously
after having faith! And whoever does not repent, it is they who are the ˹true˺ wrongdoers.
12- O believers! Avoid many suspicions, ˹for˺ indeed, some suspicions are sinful. And do
not spy, nor backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of their dead
brother? You would despise that!1 And fear Allah. Surely Allah is ˹the˺ Accepter of
Repentance, Most Merciful.
13- O humanity! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female, and made you into
peoples and tribes so that you may ˹get to˺ know one another. Surely the most noble of
you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you. Allah is truly All-Knowing, All-
Aware.

Reason For Revelation verses
11-13
Verse 11: It is said that a group from the Bani Tameem made fun of some of the poor Muslims.
Before Islam people used to have two or three nicknames. Once the Prophet PBUH called someone by their
nickname and someone else said that he hates it. So Allah revealed “And do not label others with bad names.”

Verse 13: It is said that this verse was revealed when Bilal climbed on the Ka’bah for the Azan, when the
Muslims liberated it during Fateh Makkah. Some people looked down at him and called him black slave.
Lessons Learnt
1. Allah Prohibits Mockery And Name Calling Of Others.
2. Allah Prohibits Hurting People On False Thann Or Assumptions.
3. Spying Is Haram In Islam.
4. Gheebah Is Common But Is A Major Sin.
How To Be Forgiven From Slandering & Backbiting?

First of all, you must realize that both slandering and backbiting are
major sins in Islam. Then:
1. Pray for the forgiveness of Allah with the intention of never
committing these sins again.
2. Ask for the forgiveness of the person you have hurt.
If the person forgives, you will be forgiven. If not, you will be
questioned in the Hereafter. If the person has passed away ask Allah
for forgiveness. If the person does not know, pray for forgiveness and
make du’aa for him. If telling him provokes hatred just do du’aa for him
and pray to Allah for forgiveness.
