BACKGROUND
An IUD (Intrauterine Device) is a small, T-
shaped device used as a form of long-acting
reversible contraception (LARC). It is placed
into the uterus/ womans womb to prevent
pregnancy. IUDs are among the most
effective birth control methods available,
with a failure rate of less than 1%
EXAMPLE
TYPES OF IUD
(INTRAUTERINE
DEVICE)
• Copper IUD (ParaGard)
• Hormonal IUD
DISCUSSION
• Copper IUD (ParaGard):
• Non-hormonal, made of copper wire that is
wrapped around the plastic device.
• Works by releasing copper ions that interfere
with sperm mobility and egg fertilization.
• Can be used for up to 10-12 years.
• May cause heavier menstrual bleeding and
cramping, especially in the first few months.
• One of the most effective types of IUD.
DISCUSSION
• Hormonal IUD
• Contains the hormone levonorgestrel, a type of
progestin.
• Thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for
sperm to enter the uterus, and thins the uterine
lining, reducing the likelihood of implantation.
• Can be effective for 3-7 years, depending on the
brand.
• May reduce menstrual bleeding and cramping
over time, and sometimes stops periods entirely.
BENIFITS OF USING
Highly Effective: IUD are among the most reliable forms of
IUD
contraception, with 99% effectiveness rate.
• Long term: If a woman prefers long lasting contraception
option , the IUD is ideal because it doesnt require regular
intake/attention like pills or condom.
• Reversible: Once the IUD is removed, fertility typically turns
quickly so its a reversible form of contraception.
• No Impact on other health treatments unlike some other birth
control methods, the IUD doesnt interfere with other
medications or medical treatments.
INSERTION & REMOVAL
• A healthcare provider inserts the IUD into the
PROCESS
uterus, usually during a clinic visit. It may cause
brief discomfort or cramping during the
procedure.
• Insertion is typically done within 7 days of the
start of a menstrual period for immediate
effectiveness.
• Removal is also performed by a healthcare
provider, and it can be done at any time. After
removal, fertility typically returns quickly.
• It doesnt affect the ability to conceive after
CONSIDERATIO
• IUD may not be suitable for women with
N history of pelvic infections, breast cancer,
severe liver disease.
• Women with Cervical infections, endometrial
infections, or cervical cancer may not be
candidates for IUD use.
• Though rare, there is a chance that the IUD
can be expelled ( come out of the uterus) so
it is important for you to have follow up
visits with your doctor.
