COMPONENTS OF A

COMPUTER AND ITS

FUNCTIONS
OBJECTIVES
A. Identify and describe the
components of a computer.
B. Appreciate the role of technology
in our lives.
C. Demonstrate proper use of input
and output devices.
COMPUTER- an electronic
device that is capable of
accepting, storing,
processing and outputting
data.
TWO BASIC COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER:

HARDWARE

SOFTWARE
HARDWARE- It refers to the
physical components that
make up a device or electronic
machine, and everything else
that is physically visible.
INTERNAL PARTS
OF COMPUTER
1. SYSTEM UNIT- A system unit
is the main box-like structure of
a computer with all the essential
components needed for the
computer to work.
SYSTEM UNIT
2.CPU(CENTRAL PROCESSING
UNIT)- is referred to as the
computer’s brain. It manages all
instructions and programs
running on the computer, from
hardware to software.
CPU (CENTRAL
PROCESSING
UNIT)
3.CPU Heatsink- removes heat from
device components to improve
device performance and extend its
life. It is designed to absorb the heat
coming from then CPU then
disperse the heat away from its
components.
CPU
Heatsink
4 .Power Supply - it is an integral
part of the computer that regulates
the voltage to an adequate amount
and converts the current from AC to
DC required by the computer and it
will allow the computer to run
smoothly without overheating.
Power Supply
5.RAM (RANDOM ACCESS
MEMORY)- is a computer's
short-term memory, where the
data that the processor is
currently using is stored.
RAM
(RANDOM
ACCESS
MEMORY)
6.MOTHERBOARD- A motherboard is the
main printed circuit board (PCB) in a
computer. The motherboard is a
computer's central communications
backbone connectivity point, through
which all components and external parts
connect.
MOTHER
BOARD
7.Hard Disk Drives (HDD)- a non-
volatile device for computer storage
consists of high speed rotating
magnetic disks. Referred to as
secondary devices that permanently
store data, even if the computer is
turned off.
Hard Disk Drives
(HDD)
EXTERNAL PARTS
OF COMPUTER
INPUT DEVICE

OUTPUT DEVICE
INPUT DEVICES- are hardware
devices that provide interaction
and control data to the
computer. It requires the input of
raw data for processing into the
computer.
1.Keyboard- is an input device used to
enter characters and functions into the
computer system by pressing buttons,
or keys.
2.Mouse- is a small device that a computer
user pushes across a desk surface in order
to point to a place on a display screen and
to select one or more actions to take from
that position.
3.Digital Tablet- is a computer input
device that enables a user to hand draw
or paint images, animations and
graphics, with a special pen-like stylus
4.Computer Microphone- a device
that records sound or increases the
loudness of sounds by changing the
sound waves into electrical waves.
5.Webcam- A webcam is a common video
camera that lets users record both
videos and still photographs once
connected to a personal computer.
Other Input Devices:
 Scanner - scan images and edit them, scan
documents and create PDFs, and
even scan bar codes.

 Barcode Scanner
- barcode scanners are used to
capture product information so
that it can be added to the
customer's purchase total.
OUTPUT DEVICES- these are
hardware computer equipment that
generates data from the device and
converts it to human-readable data
such as text, audio, visual format,
and hard copies.
Monitor- it refers to as a Visual
Display Unit (VDU). It creates
display and shows real-time
video, picture, and content from
tiny dots called pixels.
Types of monitors:
ØPlasma Monitor
 - A plasma display panel is a type of
flat-panel display that uses small
cells containing plasma.

ØCathode Ray Tube

(CRT) Monitor) -A cathode ray tube (CRT) is the
glass video display component of
an electronic device (usually a
television or computer monitor).
Liquid-Crystal Display (LCD Monitor)
-A liquid crystal display (LCD) is a type of
flat-panel display that utilizes liquid
crystals to modulate light, allowing it to
produce images.
 LED Monitor(Light Emitting Diode)

- An LED monitor is a type of display

that utilizes light-emitting diodes
(LEDs) for backlighting, enhancing
brightness and color range.
2.Printer- it is a electronic device
that accepts text files or images
from a computer and transfers them
to a medium such as paper or film. It
can be connected directly to the
computer or indirectly via a network.
TYPES OF PRINTERS:
ØDot Matrix -A dot matrix printer is an impact printer
Printer that produces characters and images by
striking a print head, which consists of a
series of pins, against an ink-soaked
ribbon to create patterns of dots on
paper.
 Laser -A laser printer is a type of printer that
Printer utilizes a laser beam to create high-
quality text and graphics by applying
powdered ink, known as toner, onto
paper.
Inkjet Printer
-An inkjet printer is a type of printer that
creates images and text by propelling tiny
droplets of liquid ink through nozzles onto
paper, allowing for high-quality color
output.
3.Speaker- a speaker is an output hardware
device that connects to a computer to
generate sound, and as a result, we can
listen to the sound like an outcome.
4.Headphones- Headphones are a type of hardware
output device that can be connected to a computer's
line-out or speakers port, as well as wireless using
Bluetooth. They are also referred to as earbuds. You
can watch a movie or listen to audio without bothering
anyone nearby by using headphones.
5.Projector- A projector or image
projector is an optical device that
projects an image onto a surface,
commonly a projection screen.
INSTRUCTION: WRITE if it is
INPUT DEVICE or
OUTPUT DEVICE.
1. 3.

2. 4.
5. 7.

6. 8.
9. 10.
ASSIGNMENT:
Write an essay about how technology or
computer helps you in your daily lives.
