WHA T IS EMBROIDERY SOFTWARE?
Embroidery software is a software that helps users create embroidery designs. While a large majority
of embroidery software is specific to machine embroidery , there is also software available for use
with hand embroidery , such as cross-stitch..
There is not one catch all task that all embroidery software does. There are many different types of
programs that can assist you with various tasks related to machine embroidery .
Probably the most common type of embroidery software is digitizing software. Embroidery digitizing
software allows you to create the actual embroidery designs that can be stitched out on an
embroidery machine. Digitizing software is the most complex and has the steepest learning curve. It
also tends to be the most expensive
Other types of embroidery software include embroidery editing software that allows you to make
minor edits to machine embroidery designs, and organizing software that allows you to help you
manage your embroidery design collection.
The tools for your creative embroidery designs digitizing, editing, customization, conversion,
lettering and cross stitch. Scale and resize your designs, separate, edit, display, print and
convert photos and other images into machine embroidery designs
The Types of Embroidery Software
With so many types of modern embroidery machines, picking the right one might become a trouble. Now,
read about each category in order to understand the differences:
Digitizers
The Digitizers are those types of software meant to convert the image for the embroidery file free, so it will
be ready for stitching. What it actually does is to translate or digitize the vector format into a stitch. Once
this happens, the vector format is ready for use.
Vectorizers
What this type of software does is to translate or digitize a picture in bitmap format into a vector format, or
a vectorize one. Now, what does this mean, on everyone’s language? It means that the image goes through
a linear transformation, meaning that the image is ready for digitizing.
Lettering
Also known as the monogramming software, the lettering type, as the name suggests, is meant to create
optimized stitching fonts.
Editors
While the previous types of software were more technical, the editors give access to a more creative part of
the design. So, using editors, you can begin fresh and develop all the vectorizing or the digitizing stitches
Embroidery Digitizing
• Creation of the embroidery design from artwork, photo or
from imagination is called embroidery digitizing
• Computerized embroidery machines use special input files that
instruct them how to sew out the embroidery on a fabric.
• The input files are digital stitch files, called embroidery
designs..
• An embroidery digitizing software lets you create unique designs,
convert patterns to outline stitches and embroider text labels.
1. Digitizing Software
Digitizing is the process of creating a new embroidery design either by using an
image file (.svg, .png, .jpg, .bmp, for example) as a starting point or creating from
scratch by hand.
There are two main types of digitizing software to consider.
a) Auto-Digitizing Software: is done with the click of a button and a few
parameter specifications
With auto-digitizing embroidery design software, you upload an image file (ex: .jpg.
.bmp, or .png) or vector file (ex: .svg) from your computer. With minimal user input,
the software generates an embroidery design.
This is quick and effective for some images, like simple 1-2 color logos. However,
this DOES NOT produce excellent results in many cases. The more colors you have
and the more intricate the image, the worse the quality.
b. Manual Digitizing Software
• The most advanced digitizing software is manual digitizing software,
which is significantly more expensive than auto-digitizing software. It
also has a very steep learning curve!
• This process can take anywhere from a few minutes to several days if
you’re working on a highly complex design
• Manual digitizing, however, produces the best embroidery designs
and is how professional, commercial digitizers produce images.
2. Editing and Customization
Software
• Embroidery editing, or customizing, software
allows users to alter and enhance pre-digitized
designs loaded into the program
• This type of software allows you to import
premade designs and edit or customize them.
• Examples of editing include: resizing, thread
color changes, editing of stitch properties,
splitting, merging two or more designs, and
many more things!
3. File Conversion Software

Embroidery file conversion means only taking an embroidery design file of one machine’ s
format and converting it to another embroidery file format.
Basic embroidery file conversion software converts embroidery designs from one machine
format (ex: .pes for Brother) to another format (ex: .jef for Janome).
This is NO T the same as converting a picture file (ex: .jpg or .png) to an embroidery design
file, though.
4. Thumbnail Viewers
Downloaded machine embroidery designs are in embroidery file formats such as .jef, .pes,
or .dst. These file types are not recognized by your computer, which will display a non-
descript, generic icon when showing these files.
Thumbnail viewing software tells your computer to display the actual image of an
embroidery design instead of a nondescript icon.
If you want your computer to display pictures of designs, you need to download
embroidery thumbnail software.
