What is Domain Name, Domain Rule and
Domain Extension?

 What is a Domain Name?

The domain name is the address of your website that people type in the
browser URL bar to visit your website. In simple words, if your website was a
home, your domain name would be its address.
The domain name is also part of your online address and your visitors will
use it to find it easily. For example, the domain name TPI Online Academy is
https://lms.theprofessionalinstitutes.org. Your domain name is unique to
you. Once you register it, no one can register it if you continue to renew it.
A more detailed description:

 The Internet is a vast network of computers connected to each other through a global
network of cables. Each computer in this network can communicate with other computers.
 To identify them, each computer is assigned an IP address. It is a series of numbers that
identifies a particular computer on the Internet. A typical IP address looks like this:
 66.249.66.1
 Now it is quite difficult to remember such an IP address. Imagine if you had to use such
numbers to visit your favorite websites.
 The domain name was invented to solve this problem.
 Now if you want to visit a website, you do not need to enter a long string of numbers.
Instead, you can view it by typing an easy to remember domain name into your browser's
address bar. For example, onlineabiolian.com.ng.
 Registering a domain name can be easy as you can select whichever name you want, but
the one you choose is important to your business future or your blogging website.
Therefore, in this section, we focus on some rules that we should keep in mind before
purchasing domain names
Rule 1 - Choose a domain name that can be your brand name if necessary. Our
domain name theprofessionalinstitutes.org is actually branding because there is
no common keyword string like the-professional-institutes.org where '-' is
located, it can be hard to remember.

If your brand does not have numbers, do not buy a domain with numbers
because there is no brand match from the user point of view. For example,
theprofessionalinstitutes29.org.
Rule 2 - If you have financial possibilities, you can buy domains with various
extensions like .com, .org, .net, .info, .biz, etc. for example In some case, it
would be like onlineabiola.com, onlineabianian.info, oinlineabiolian.biz are
domains that are incorrectly created, such as a similar case google.com. If you
type gogle.com then an 'O' is missing, but it will still redirect you to the
official website google.com.
Rule 3 - You must ensure that this domain name is not a trademark or copyright.

Rule 4 - Find a short domain name. Typing the characters of a domain name to shortlist on short,
social media platforms and in search results is easy to say.

Rule 5 - Extensions are suffixes like .com or .net at the end of a web address. These may have
specific uses, so make sure to select an extension for your business. The .com domain extension is
by far the most popular, but it can be hard to get a short and memorable .com domain name as it has
been for so long. If your webpage is locally, you can buy it with your country suffixes
like .ng, .fr, .bj, .gh etc.

Rule 6 - If your domain name is not going by the brand name, you should at least use specific
keywords that describe your business, for example, onlineabiolian.com.ng. It helps improve your
rank on search engines (which increases traffic) and it also matters more to your customers.
Domain name extension

 The first domain type is the Top Level Domain

(TLD). These top level domains include any
extension that has only one suffix - for
example, .net, .info, .biz and so on.
 Second Level Domains (2LDs) are domain names
with another level after the .com or .co suffix. For
example, .com.au, .com.ng is a second level domain
style because it has an extra suffix followed by .com
indicating that the website originates in Australia
and Nigeria.
A gTLD is a Generic Top-level Domain and includes addresses such as
- .marketing, .estate, .fashion and .photography. This is a fast growing segment that is very
popular lately and has a large range to choose from, whatever your industry!

CcTLDs are Country Code Top-Level Domains that are usually limited to a few countries.
These are domains such as .ng, .gh, .au, .uk, .ae, .us, etc.
Expansion also has a meaning. The meanings of some top-level domains are listed as
follows -

 .com – commercial − This is an open TLD; any person or entity is permitted to

register and it is always the main TLD.

 .org – organization − This is an open TLD; any person or entity is permitted to

register. But, it is originally intended for use by any non-profit organizations. But
as of now, there are no such restrictions and the .org domain name is being used by
numerous organizations.
 .net – network − This is an open TLD; any person or entity is permitted to register. It
was originally intended for use by domains pointing to a distributed network of
computers, or "Umbrella" sites that act as a portal to a set of smaller websites.

 .edu – education − This TLD is limited to specific higher educational institutions such
as, but not limited to, trade schools and universities.

 .mil – military − The .mil TLD is limited to use by the United States military.

 .arpa – Address and routing − It is for Advanced Research Projects Agency in the
early days on the Internet, .arpa is now exclusively used as an Internet infrastructure
TLD.
